Former Brazilian President Lula: It's Clear Marielle Franco's Assassination Was Premeditated 19.3.2018 Truthout - All Articles
In a Democracy Now! exclusive, we spend the hour with Brazil's former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who is now running for president again. We begin our discussion with the assassination of 38-year-old Rio city councilmember and human rights activist Marielle Franco, who was killed last week. Franco, who was a black lesbian, was known for her fierce criticism of police killings in Brazil's impoverished favela neighborhoods. Her death comes at a pivotal moment for Brazil and the future of democracy in South America's largest country. Just last month, President Michel Temer ordered Brazil's military to assume control of police duties in Rio. "The only thing that she did was to work against the assassination of black people in the peripheral areas in the defense of human rights," says Lula da Silva. TRANSCRIPT This is a rush transcript. Shocking New Investigation Links Berta Cáceres’s Assassination to Executives at Honduran Dam Company 1.11.2017 Truthout.com
We look at shocking revelations released Tuesday that link the assassination of renowned Honduran indigenous environmental leader Berta Cáceres to the highest levels of the company whose hydroelectric dam project she and her indigenous Lenca community were protesting. We speak with New York Times reporter Elisabeth Malkin, who has read the new report by a team of five international lawyers who found evidence that the plot to kill Cáceres went up to the top of the Honduran energy company behind the dam, Desarrollos Energéticos, known as "DESA." The lawyers were selected by Cáceres's daughter Bertha Zúniga and are independent of the Honduran government's ongoing official investigation. They examined some 40,000 pages of text messages. The investigation also revealed DESA exercised control over security forces in the area, issuing directives and paying for police units' room, board and equipment. A new Middle East policy for the West: Get out 7.9.2017 rabble.ca - News for the rest of us
World For those (mostly Christians) attracted to the idea that the "war on terror" is a clash of civilizations (a poisonous notion guaranteed to foment decades of unrestrained violence), a caution: you might want to consider ignoring the Old Testament injunction an "eye for an eye." For if there is a moral equivalent to the dead on both sides, an eye for an eye will mean literally thousands of terror attacks like the recent horrific one in Barcelona, where 16 people were killed. The body count in the West's criminal assault on Middle East nations is now in the millions. In Syria the death toll is now 470,000. In Iraq, it is a staggering 1,455,590 (not counting foreigners). In Afghanistan, it's 105,000 , including Taliban and Afghan soldiers and police. In Yemen, pulverized by U.S.-backed Saudi Arabia, repeatedly accused of war crimes, the toll is now over 12,000 (including 1,500 from war-induced cholera), mostly civilians. A child dies of malnutrition every 10 minutes. It is impossible to get an accurate ...

Proxy War and Surrogate Terror: How the US Came to Take an Active Role in War and Torture in Latin America 29.6.2017 Truthout - All Articles
Although US involvement in torture focused on the Iraq War in the last decade, the United States has had a long involvement by proxy with torture and the killing of peasants and Indigenous peoples in Latin America. In this excerpt from his book, The Violent American Century, John W. Dower describes the US role in facilitating death and destruction in Latin and South America over the past few decades. Soldiers conduct a static line jump in the Colombian National Training Center on Fort Tolemaida, August 31, 2011. (Photo: The US Army ) How has the United States shaped the face of modern warfare? In The Violent American Century, John W. Dower examines the transformations in war conduct and strategizing that have taken place since the end of World War II, led by the US: from the proxy wars and nuclear terror of the Cold War to the asymmetrical conflicts, drone strikes and torture of today's "war on terror." 'Julius Caesar' Star Considered The Play To Be Donald Trump 'Resistance' 24.6.2017 Politics on HuffingtonPost.com
The New York Public Theater’s presentation of William Shakespeare’s 400-year-old play, “Julius Caesar” was embroiled in controversy this month, with protests over a choice to costume the titular character as President Donald Trump . This wardrobe decision was controversial because senators plot to stab Caesar to death in the play.  Now that this run of “Julius Caesar” has come to an end, actor Corey Stoll has written a piece for Vulture about what it was like to star in the play. Stoll had the role of Marcus Brutus, a reluctant assassin of Caesar. Although the play is explicitly about the pitfalls of assassination, Stoll wrote that following through with the play amid the protest eventually felt like a contribution to the “resistance.” These days, that term is loaded to evoke the phrase ”#resist” which refers to a rallying cry against Trump . “The protesters never shut us down, but we had to fight each night to make sure they did not distort the story we were telling,” wrote Stoll in the piece that was ...

White House Strongly Condemns Johnny Depp’s Assassination Remarks 23.6.2017 Politics on HuffingtonPost.com
The White House has strongly condemned Johnny Depp ’s remarks on Thursday in which the actor joked about assassinating the President Donald Trump. “ President Trump has condemned violence in all forms and it’s sad that others like Johnny Depp have not followed his lead,” deputy White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Friday. “I hope that some of Mr. Depp’s colleagues will speak out against this type of rhetoric as strongly as they would if his comments were directed to a Democrat elected official,” she added.  White House response to #JohnnyDepp Comments. Per White House Official: pic.twitter.com/y9X22Da2pl — Fin Gomez (@finnygo) June 23, 2017 On Thursday, while introducing the 2004 film “The Libertine” at the Glastonbury arts festival in England, Depp playfully asked, “When was the last time an actor assassinated a president?” The question was in clear reference to the assassination of Abraham Lincoln in 1865 by John Wilkes Booth. He continued, “I want to clarify: I’m not an actor. I lie ...

Javier Valdez and the Drug War That Killed Him 23.6.2017 Truthout.com
One month ago today a burly, middle-aged reporter set out from the offices of the news weekly Riodoce that he co-founded some fourteen years ago, walking toward his car at high noon. In the preceding days, the internationally renowned journalist had admitted to people close to him that he felt anxious about his safety. He had just penned what would be his last column that morning when his life was brought to an abrupt end by two unknown assassins using a silencer. The killers reportedly dragged him from his car and shot as many as 13 rounds into his body, in the middle of a city street. To the shock of the nation and his many readers, fellow journalists and admirers in Mexico and abroad, Javier Valdez Cárdenas was murdered openly in his hometown of Culiacan, Sinaloa -- a capital city notorious for being located in the middle of a fierce drug war. The reason behind the shock was not that hit men struck a journalist. There have been eight journalists assassinated in Mexico this year alone, a ...

'Julius Caesar' Halted As Protester Storms Stage, Another Screams At 'Nazis' 17.6.2017 Politics on HuffingtonPost.com
— Jack Posobiec (@JackPosobiec) June 17, 2017 Commotion erupted briefly Friday night in New York City’s Central Park as a protester stormed an outdoor stage during the assassination scene of Shakespeare’s “Julius Caesar,” while another shouted from the audience, calling the crowd watching the provocative play “Nazis.” The New York Public Theater’s presentation of the 400-year-old play features actors in modern-day garb and attempts to explore issues of politics, idealism, plots and dictators in Shakespeare’s examination of Caesar’s life and death. The actor playing Caesar sports a navy blue suit, a red tie and reddish blonde hair, and grabs at his wife’s crotch in a characterization that evokes President  Donald Trump . The wild scene at Friday’s performance was captured in videos posted to Twitter, including one by the protester in the audience ―  Jack Posobiec , a Trump fan and “ Pizzagate ” conspiracy theorist . Just as the assassination scene was beginning Friday night, Laura Loomer, a right-wing ...

Gabrielle Giffords' Call For Sympathy And Understanding Is Met With... Hate 14.6.2017 Politics on HuffingtonPost.com
As an assassination attempt survivor, former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) knows a thing or two about gun violence. In 2011, the congresswoman was shot in the head during a campaign event in Arizona. On Wednesday, she reacted to the news of a  shooting at a congressional baseball practice  with deep sympathy for those affected. She also expressed appreciation for the Capitol Police, whose quick response undoubtedly stopped a tragic situation from becoming worse: My heart is with my former colleagues, their families & staff, and the US Capitol Police- public servants and heroes today and every day. — Gabrielle Giffords (@GabbyGiffords) June 14, 2017 While the vast majority of respondents from all sides of the political spectrum welcomed the compassionate tweet, some... didn’t. Instead, a subset of angry internet trolls latched onto Giffords as a target, attacking her on Twitter and accusing her of all manner of wrongs. BS, you probably staged this for another gun-grab attempt. Sorry, TRAITOR, it's ...

Navy Ship Named For Gun Violence Survivor Gabrielle Giffords Commissioned 11.6.2017 Politics on HuffingtonPost.com
The U.S. Navy on Saturday commissioned a warship named for former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.), making it the third Navy ship ever to be named after a living woman. Giffords resigned her House seat in 2012 after surviving an assassination attempt at a grocery story in Tucson, Arizona. Then-Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus contacted Giffords  that day to tell her that a warship would be named in her honor. The 418-foot littoral combat ship  was built in Mobile, Alabama, and christened by Dr. Jill Biden in 2015. Democratic heavyweights, including former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton , former Vice President Joe Biden and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi attended the commissioning. Clinton, Pelosi and Biden honored the former representative for her service in the House, her heroism following the assassination attempt and her dedicated activism since then. “Indeed throughout the world, and throughout America, there isn’t a name more universally loved, more admired, more respected than the name of ...

America’s Soviet Problem Is All Around Us 6.6.2017 Politics on HuffingtonPost.com
Cross-posted with TomDispatch.com Jump into your time machine and let me transport you back to another age. It’s May 2001 and the Atlantic Monthly has just arrived in the mail.  I’m tantalized by the cover article.  “Russia is finished,” the magazine announces.  The subtitle minces no words: “The unstoppable descent into social catastrophe and strategic irrelevance.”  Could it be that the country I had worried most about as a military officer during all those grim years of the Cold War, the famed “Evil Empire” that had threatened us with annihilation, was truly kaput, even in its Russian rather than Soviet guise? Sixteen years later, the article’s message seems just a tad premature.  Today’s Russia surely has its problems ― from poverty to pollution to prostitution to a rickety petro-economy ― but on the geopolitical world stage, it is “finished” no longer.  Vladimir Putin’s Russia has recently been enjoying heightened influence, largely at the expense of a divided and disputatious superpower that now ...
