"Astoundingly Disturbing": Obama Administration Claims Power to Wage Endless War Across the Globe
|
17.5.2013 |
Democracy Now! |
| A Pentagon official predicted Thursday the war against al-Qaeda and its affiliates could last up to 20 more years. The comment came during a Senate hearing revisiting the Authorization for Use of Military Force, or AUMF, enacted by Congress days after the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. At the hearing, Pentagon officials claimed the AUMF gives the president power to wage endless war anywhere in the world, including in Syria, Yemen and the Congo. "This is the most astounding and most astoundingly disturbing hearing that I've been to since I've been here," said Independent Sen. Angus King of Maine. "You guys have essentially rewritten the Constitution here today." We play excerpts of Thursday's Senate hearing and our recent interview with Jeremy Scahill, author of the new bestseller, "Dirty Wars: The World Is a Battlefield." |

Without going over the edge to Rush Limbaugh territory, the internal spying on reporters and politicization of the IRS do raise the question. Could Obama be trumping “Tricky Dick” on the latter’s home turf? Few politicians can match Richard Milhous Nixon for obsession with leaks, propagation of secret wars and creation of a list of enemies. read more |

Note From Boston Bombing Suspect: Attack Was Retribution for Iraq, Afghanistan Wars
|
16.5.2013 |
CommonDreams.org Headlines |
| The remaining suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings left a note written on a wall in the boat where he was hiding justifying the attack as retribution for the U.S. wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, CBS reported on Thursday.
"When you attack one Muslim, you attack all Muslims," the note read. It called the marathon victims "collateral damage" just as Muslims have been "collateral damage" from U.S.-waged wars.

Three brave women behind human rights case against former Guatemalan president
|
16.5.2013 |

| May 16, 2013
Former Guatemalan President Efrain Rios Montt was hauled off to prison last Friday. It was a historic moment, the first time in history that a former leader of a country was tried for genocide in a national court. More than three decades after he seized power in a coup in Guatemala, unleashing a U.S.-backed campaign of slaughter against his own people, the 86-year-old stood trial, charged with genocide and crimes against humanity. He was given an 80-year prison sentence. The case was inspired and pursued by three brave Guatemalan women: the judge, the attorney general and the Nobel Peace Prize laureate.

Allan Nairn: After Ríos Montt Verdict, Time for U.S. to Account for Its Role in Guatemalan Genocide
|
15.5.2013 |
Democracy Now! |
| Following last week’s guilty verdict in Guatemala's historic genocide trial, reporter Allan Nairn says the United States should follow Guatemala's lead and indict the Reagan administration officials who supported the genocide under General Efraín Ríos Montt. "All of [these crimes] were crimes not just of General Ríos Montt, but also of the U.S. government," Nairn says. Former President Ronald Reagan once called Ríos Montt "a man of great personal integrity." After the verdict, Judge Yasmin Barrios ordered the attorney general to launch an immediate investigation of "all others" connected to the crimes. |
