Wind farms get pass on eagle deaths
|
15.5.2013 |
Salt Lake Tribune |
| by Dina Cappiello The Associated Press
Published May 14, 2013 08:24PM MDT
Converse County, Wyo. • Wind farms in this corner of Wyoming have killed more than four dozen golden eagles since 2009, one of the deadliest places in the country of its kind. But so far, the companies operating industrial-sized turbines here and elsewhere that are killing eagles and other protected birds have yet to be fined or prosecuted - even though every death is a criminal violation. The Obama administration has charged oil companies for drowning birds in their waste pits, and power compa... ... |

Sharper Computer Models Clear the Way for More Wind Power
|
14.5.2013 |
Technology Review Feed - Tech Review Top Stories |
| New prediction models can allow utilities to rely more heavily on wind and save millions. The utility with the most wind power capacity in the United States, Xcel Energy, is relying more on this power source and saving millions of dollars thanks to new forecasting models similar to those used to predict climate change.

Ramez Naam: 7 reasons China might lead the world in fighting climate change
|
11.5.2013 |
Twincities.com: Opinion |
| China is an environmental mess. Smog in Beijing is so bad it's literally broken the air-quality index. In Shanghai, it's at times turned the city into a scene from "Blade Runner." (It almost matches the infamous Cleveland smog of the 1970s.) Meanwhile, thousands of dead pigs -- cause of death not yet known -- have been floating down a river that cuts through Shanghai and provides part of the region's drinking water. More than half of China's water is so polluted, in fact, that even treatment plants can't make it safe to drink. And China is now responsible for almost half the world's coal consumption. That coal burning not only contributes to climate change -- it's also saddled China with severe cases of acid rain, something the United States dealt with a generation ago. |

Companies won't face charges in condor deaths

LA Times: Science |
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service grants exceptions to a wind farm and a building project in harassing or killing the endangered birds.
Federal wildlife officials took the unprecedented step Friday of telling private companies that they will not be prosecuted for inadvertently harassing or even killing endangered California condors. |

Wind Turbines, Battery Included, Can Keep Power Supplies Stable
|
7.5.2013 |
Technology Review Feed - Tech Review Top Stories |
| Advances like GE’s new hybrid wind turbines could make renewable energy more practical. GE recently sold the first of a new line of “hybrid” wind turbines that comes with a battery attached. The turbine’s battery can store the equivalent of less than one minute of the turbine operating at full power. But, by pairing the battery with advanced wind-forecasting algorithms, wind farm operators could guarantee a certain amount of power output for up to an hour.

GE says tax changes fuel 1 gigawatt of new wind orders
|
6.5.2013 |
Yahoo: Business |
| (Reuters) - General Electric Co said on Monday the renewal of the U.S. production tax credit has helped it sell wind turbines with 1 gigawatt of generating power since January. The credit, a key lifeline for the nascent wind power industry, was caught up in fiscal cliff negotiations in the U.S. Congress at the end of last year, and for a time it was unclear whether it would be renewed. Congress renewed it shortly after the new year began. The tax break provides an income tax credit of 2. ... |

The Busch Doctrine: Tilting For Windmills
|
6.5.2013 |
American Spectator |
| In most any other circumstance, Elizabeth Colbert Busch would get nowhere near the title of Congresswoman. The district she’s running in, South Carolina’s 1st, encompasses the genteel, cosmopolitan Lowcountry and slants strongly Republican. Last year, residents there elected Tea Partier Tim Scott with 65 percent of the vote.
But when GOP primary voters chose their nominee for tomorrow’s special election, they settled on hiking enthusiast Mark Sanford. The race crystallized as a referendum on he, the state’s wayward former governor, allowing Colbert Busch to fly mostly under the radar.
The progressive Democrat focused on building a moderate image around bipartisan pragmatism, family values, and job creation. “I approve this message,” she ends one campaign ad, “because I’m not going to talk about the jobs that we’ve lost. I know what it takes to create new jobs.”
Colbert Busch does have private sector experience , mainly with ... |
