Sen. Rockefeller Attacks Clean Air Act
|
5.3.2010 |
Commondreams.org Newswire |
| FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE March 4, 2010 Friends of the EarthFriends of the Earth President Erich Pica had the following statement in response to today's introduction by Sen. John Rockefeller (D-W.V.) of a bill that would freeze enforcement of global warming pollution through the Clean Air Act for at least two years: "The bill introduced by Sen. Rockefeller would allow climate-warming pollution from the country's biggest industrial emitters to continue unchecked. It is yet another example of the overwhelming power polluting corporate interests have in Washington. read more |

Stop the Attacks on the Clean Air Act
|
4.3.2010 |
AlterNet |
A Senate vote is looming on a measure that would gut the Clean Air Act, proposed by Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski. The resolution’s passage would give big polluters a bail out by blocking President Obama and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) from taking action to limit global warming pollution – even from the biggest polluters [...] |

Fifteen states have polluter-driven resolutions to deny climate threat
|
3.3.2010 |
Grist Magazine |
| Cross-posted from the Wonk Room .
Yesterday, the South Dakota legislature passed a resolution telling public schools to teach “balance” about the “ prejudiced ” science of climate change by a vote of 37-33. Earlier language that ascribed “ astrological ” influences to global warming was stripped from the final version.
This act of conspiracy-driven ideology is hardly alone—a Wonk Room
investigation has found at least 15 state legislatures attempting
to prevent limits on greenhouse gas pollution. The states of Alabama
and Utah have already adopted resolutions calling for the overturn of the Environmental Protection Agency’s global warming endangerment finding , with legislators in 13 more ... |

No Dirty Air Act Update
|
27.2.2010 |
WireTap Magazine |
| Global warming poses a profound threat to the future of the earth and its people. Despite the importance of tackling the problem, the U.S. Senate has thus far failed to pass comprehensive legislation to cap and reduce global warming pollution. While the U.S. Senate stalls, some Senators are even working to prevent the Environmental Protection [...] |

Coal-Fired Power on the Way Out?
|
25.2.2010 |
CommonDreams.org Headlines |
| by Lester R. Brown
WASHINGTON - The past two years have witnessed the emergence of a powerful movement opposing the construction of new coal-fired power plants in the United States. Initially led by environmental groups, both national and local, it has since been joined by prominent national political leaders and many state governors.
The principal reason for opposing coal plants is that they are changing the earth's climate. There is also the effect of mercury emissions on health and the 23,600 U.S. deaths each year from power plant air pollution.

Coal-fired power on the way out?

The principal reason for opposing coal plants is that they are changing the earth’s climate. There is also the effect of mercury emissions on health and the 23,600 U.S. deaths each year from power plant air pollution.
Over the last few years the coal industry has suffered one setback after another. The Sierra Club, which has kept a tally of proposed coal-fired power plants and their fates since 2000, reports that 123 plants have been ... |

EPA’s Jackson establishes deliberative path to control global warming pollution
|
23.2.2010 |
Gristmill |
| Big oil, the Chamber of Commerce , the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM), and senators including Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) are whipping up hysterical fears that the Environmental Protection
Agency will use its existing authority under the Clean Air Act to
immediately restrict global warming pollution for even the smallest of
emitters. For instance, NAM President John Engler makes the ridiculous claim that
“If EPA moves forward and begins regulating stationary sources, it will
open the door for them to regulate everything from industrial
facilities to farms to even American homes.”
In fact, EPA’s efforts are simply following the law of the land established by the  Supreme Court decision in ... |

Asia-Produced Ozone Making its Way to US
|
21.2.2010 |
Truthout - All Articles |
| Washington - A new study further bolsters concerns that pollution blowing across the Pacific Ocean from China and other rapidly developing Asian nations may swamp efforts to clean up the air in the Western United States and make it difficult for states and cities to meet federal standards.
The study, based on 100,000 measurements over 25 years and a computer model tracking air-flow patterns, found that during the spring, ozone from Asia reaches Washington, Oregon, California and other states west of the Rocky Mountains.
