The driver of a sand-laden tractor tried to murder the tahsildar of Ramdurg taluk, when the latter was proceeding to an illegal sand mining site in Huli goppa village late on Monday night.

On getting information about illegal sand mining on the banks of Malaprabha in Huligoppa, tahsildar Ramachandra Katti set out for the site in his official jeep without police protection. On the way, the driver of a sand-laden tractor-trailer crashed his vehicle into the tahsildar's jeep. However, the tractor turned turtle and the driver fled the spot. The tahsildar was treated for injuries at a hospital. Ramdurg police have registered a case.

Although there is no official data, studies estimate illegal extraction of sand in India generates about $150 million a year with the states of Gujarat and Maharashtra the main hotspots. An investigation in Mumbai, the nearby city of Thane, and villages in the neighbouring district of Palghar over two months found evidence of at least two deaths in the past year and more in the past few years - none of which were reported.
