Despite Centre, Maharashtra crackdown, 75,000 daily wage sand miners work without safety measures 13.8.2018 DNA: India
Raghunath Bartade watched helplessly as his brother was dragged off the sand-mining boat, his leg tangled in the anchor rope and his arms flailing as he sank into the murky creek near Mumbai. Moments earlier, Raghunath and Babban Bartade had been dredging sand by hand from the bottom of the creek - an often deadly trade that fuels the nation’s booming construction industry, and continues despite an official crackdown. "We found his body within minutes," said Bartade, adding that he has witnessed several incidents of drowning since he began mining sand 13 years ago. "The miners usually drift away in the water and their body surfaces days later," he said, standing outside his hut in Bharatpada village in Palghar district adjoining Mumbai on a rainy afternoon with his brother's children hovering close by. Babban's death in June came a year after a Thomson Reuters Foundation investigation revealed workers were drowning while illegally mining sand in Vasai Creek, one of the two main distributaries of the ...

Short on sand, real estate developers in Rajasthan face penalty threat 17.6.2018 DNA: Opinion
Faced with the unprecedented crisis of construction sand, the real estate developers in the state are having a tough time coming to terms with Real Estate Regulatory Act (RERA) and have thus sought relaxation in the prescribed deadline for completion of their projects registered with RERA.  As there is no provision that addresses a situation like this, these developers have sought intervention of the state government. “We have explained our difficulties to the chief minister and submitted our proposal for relaxation in the deadline to chief secretary and urban department,” said Gopal Gupta chairman of CREDAI, Rajasthan.  According to the real estate developers body, short supply of construction sand has slowed down the construction works by almost 50 per cent. The crisis has emerged following a ban imposed by Supreme Court on unwarranted mining of bajri from river beds in the state. The shortage of the construction sand has affected all infrastructure projects, however, the real estate projects are also ...

Ahmedabad: Drone tech helps in busting Rs 6.25 cr sand mining racket 16.6.2018 DNA: Top News
In a major operation, the Ahmedabad district administration has busted a sand mining racket in which sand worth more than Rs 6 crore was allegedly illegally mined. An official press release said that checks were conducted in Gyaspur on Wednesday by a team of government officials after drone surveillance over the past few days revealed that illegal sand mining was taking place in the area. The release said that people involved in the illegal operations fled from the scene when the team reached there but left behind vehicles that were being used for digging and ferrying sand. Investigations revealed that the machine used for sand mining is owned by Bhavan Bharwad, against whom several cases of illegal mining were also registered in the past. Initial estimates suggest that sand worth Rs6.25 crore had been illegally mined from the Gyaspur plot measuring 2.36 hectare, the release said. District collector Vikrant Pandey told DNA that this is the first case of illegal mining busted with the aid of drone ...
