Public slams state government for illegal coal mining in state 16.12.2018 Meghalaya Times

Staff Reporter
SHILLONG, Dec 16: Following the death of 13 miners last Tuesday in East Jaintia Hills (EJH) preceded by a deadly attack on CSWO President, Agnes Kharshiing and her companion, Amita Sangma, sharp reactions are emerging from the general public who says that the lie of the state government is caught red-handed and now it is time to show up.
Public are questioning that when the Umiam based North Eastern Space Application Centre (NESAC) has confirmed coal mining activities in Jaintia Hills following collection of data by satellite, how is the state government in a denial mode. Although Conrad has acknowledged that illegal mining is on in the state, opinions are emerging that the death of 13 miners in EJH and that too when unscientific mining of coal is banned by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) is a clear indication of rampant illegal mining of coal in the state.

Sonar system fails to detect trapped coal miners in Meghalaya 15.12.2018 Meghalaya Times

Shillong, Dec 15: The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) on Saturday used sonar system and underwater camera to detect 13 miners who have been trapped inside a coal pit filled with water in Meghalaya's East Jaintia Hills district since Thursday morning.
However, the system failed to locate any of the trapped miners in the main well of the 370-feet coal pit because of poor visibility.
As the water level at the pit did not recede much despite continuous pumping, the NDRF officials suggested to the district administration of East Jaintia Hills to call in the Oil Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) to deploy "submersible water pumps" to reduce the water level.
