A rare pear-shaped blue diamond, originating from the Golconda mines in India, passed between Europe's royal houses for more than 300 years, has been sold at auction for a whopping USD 6.7 million. Known as the Farnese Blue, the 6.16-carat jewel surpassed pre-auction estimates after going under the hammer yesterday for the first time at Sotheby's Geneva. The fancy dark grey-blue diamond takes its name from the second wife of King Philip V of Spain, Elisabeth Farnese, who received it as a wedding gift in 1715. Over the next three centuries, the jewel was passed down to through generations of her descendants, which -- due to marriages between European houses -- saw it join the royal families of France, Italy and Austria. The National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC) today signed two agreements for information technology innovation in mining operation management and carrying out research for water purification in mining areas in Chhattisgarh with CHiPS and NIT. A Zimbabwean parliamentary committee is summoning former leader Robert Mugabe to appear before it over alleged diamond looting during his rule. Mugabe, who resigned in November following a military intervention, has said USD 15 billion worth of diamonds were looted from fields in the country's east. He later said he had no basis for that figure. But parliamentary committee chairman Temba Mliswa tells The Associated Press the 94-year-old still should appear on May 9 to explain his statements. This is the first time a public institution has summoned Mugabe to account for the alleged looting. Zimbabwe security agencies were involved in the mining with Chinese firms until the government cancelled all diamond mining licenses there in 2016. Mliswa says parliament "very soon" will dispatch an official letter for Mugabe to attend.
