At least 40 cases of malaria have been reported in the first 11 days of August in Delhi, taking the total number of people affected by the vector-borne disease in the city this season to 128, according to the latest municipal report. Two cases of malaria were reported in February, one each in April and March, 17 in May, 25 in June, 42 in July and 40 till August 11, according to the report released yesterday by the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC), which tabulates data on vector-borne diseases for the city. Of the total 64 dengue cases this season, 15 were reported till August 11, 19 were reported in July, six in January, three in February, one in March, two in April, 10 in May and eight in June. Four fresh cases of chikungunya have also been reported in the last week, taking the total number of people affected this season to 41. At least 13 fresh cases of malaria were reported by the various MCDs in the civic body last week, thus taking the total count of people affected by the disease to 88. The total number of cases of dengue and chikungunya reported by July 28 are 49 and 35, respectively, higher than last week's numbers. Doctors and authorities fear that the cases will rise in the coming days because of waterlogging at various locations caused by incessant rains in the past few days. While malaria is showing a significant rise, six new cases of dengue and one of chikungunya were recorded in the week. There have been 42 cases of malaria in July, as compared to May and June when there were only 17 and 25 cases, respectively. Dengue cases have risen from 10 and eight for dengue in May and June, respectively, to 19 and nine and three for chikungunya to 19 in July. As the monsoon season arrives, so does all the problems associated with it. The major ones being the potholes on the roads and mosquitoes that cause vector-borne diseases. Many roads in the national Capital have the pits that are overlooked and are now becoming breeding grounds for mosquitoes thus causing diseases. More than 40 cases of malaria and 14 cases of chikungunya have already been reported in the city till June 23, and despite this, the open pits on roads and construction sites are left ignored. The season for the vector-borne diseases typically starts in mid-July and lasts till November-end. In order to take precautionary measures, the government has directed all hospitals to increase their bed capacity by 20 per cent.
