Citizens win: Drop Koramangala corridor project, says govt panel (Cached) 5.10.2012 Citizen Matters
After the High Court, now it is now a government committee that is saying residents were right all along. It has recommended that Hosur road be redesigned to reduce the traffic burden on residential areas.

Trees were cut, roads were dug up and traffic diverted for the Agara-Sirsi Ciricle signal-free corridor project. BDA vehemently defended the project while residents in Koramangala questioned the logic and took it to the court. Now a year since the struggle, Koramangala residents feel vindicated. The government-appointed committee that looked into the project has recommended that the project be dropped.

In July, High Court had ordered that the government committee should engage with citizens and give its recommendations on the project. HC had given this order in a petition filed by residents and civic associations. The committee was formed by ex-Chief…

Palace grounds: No bands only baraat (Cached) 25.9.2012 Citizen Matters
A space for all the rock concerts, consumer shows and political rallies now stands silent. While event organisers have found newer venues, the question - what will become of Palace grounds, still remains unanswered.

Slayer - an American band, is one of the big heavy metal bands around the world. It will be holding its first ever concert in India on October 20, 2012. But there will be no Palace Grounds to welcome them. Government put a ban on the commercial activities at Palace Grounds in early August this year. Instead, the band is performing in Bharatiya city, a 125 acre township in Hebbal.

Naina Roy, a Fashion Designer from HSR layout, says, "The big daddies of thrash metal - Slayer is playing on October 20 in Bangalore. I am a big fan,…

Now: a citizen-govt committee to mull over Koramangala project (Cached) 15.8.2012 Citizen Matters
Citizens, RWAs and government officials have 10 days to submit an alternate plan for the Agara-Sirsi Circle signal-free corridor project
After the High Court ordered the stay on signal-free corridor work in Koramangala, citizens have now formally been asked to suggest alternatives. A sub-committee, comprising six citizen representatives and a few government representatives, have been asked to submit alternate plans by August 25th.

This sub-committee was formed by, and has to report to, a government-appointed committee. According to the court order, the government-appointed committee should hear concerns of citizens and submit a report to the court on September 15th. Court will then make a final decision on the project on October 5th.

The first hearing of the government's committee - headed by…

Breath of fresh air around airport 21.7.2012 Asian Age: Bengaluru
Bengaluru has lost its traditional green belts due to rapid urbanisation in recent years, so the concept of a ‘Green Belt’ around the Bengaluru International Airport is a welcome one. A green belt or necklace around the BIA is a good idea as it would absorb pollutants spewed into the air by the movement of heavy aircraft, says environmentalist A. N. Yellappa Reddy. “Every day over 400 aircraft movements are recorded at BIA, besides thousands of vehicles burning the fuel. During such heavy activity, large amounts of carbon are emitted and due to combustion activity a large amount of oxygen in the atmosphere is lost. This could lead to breathing problems and cause headaches too. By creating the green belt around the airport we are trying to make up for the lost oxygen,” Mr Reddy explained. To begin with, the respective departments in Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural and Chikkaballapur will identify the land required to create the new green belt. “The government departments will identify ...

Citizens’ groups unite to fight unscientific road widening 18.7.2012 Asian Age: Bengaluru
The government intent on widening more roads in the city could have a fight on its hands as several citizens’ groups and resident welfare associations have come together to form a united front against the project. Tuesday saw the launch of the Bengaluru Transportation Projects Impacted Communities (BATPIC) which made it clear that it will not accept unscientific road widening without protest. Accusing the BBMP of flouting norms in the Transfer of Development Rights offered to people forced to give up properties for road widening, BATPIC said it is planning to come out with progressive solutions to the city's infrastructure troubles. “Not just the BBMP, but the BDA, Directorate of Urban Land Transport and the Urban Development Department of the state government, which are required to offer progressive and inclusive solutions that work for all, are also peddling projects that are disastrous,” said members of the network, drawn from the Bengaluru South Residents Welfare Association, Citizens Support ...
