With increasing awareness about the health benefits of millets and organically-grown produces, exhibition and outlets selling such produces have not become very uncommon in recent years, and now, organic and millet lovers have another event to visit in the City, where farmers groups and organic firms have also brought millets, organically grown food grains, and other products. A three-day Organic & Millet Mela, organised by Agriculture Department and Sahaja Samruddha, has begun at Laxmi Sadan at JC Nagar here. Farmers groups from different places are showcasing Navane, Sajje, Baraga, Save, Ragi and other millets, while bamboo rice, flour, honey, juice, Lavancha, herbal products, food products, and cosmetics items are also available. The exhibition, which is open from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm, is aimed at creating awareness among both consumers and farmers about the importance of millets and organic food grains. Soon, you can relish an Italian delicacy with an Indian twist. Pasta that is conventionally made with plain flour, will now be made available with millets as the main ingredient. At the four-day 13th Agricultural Congress, a good number of stalls selling varieties of millets and an array of millet-based products were set up. Pasta is among the other ready-to-cook millet products available. From ragi spaghetti to shell pasta made of foxtail millet, a variety of innovative products were made available. Among the other products made with millets were biscuits, a protein health mix, dosa and idli batter, puliyogare mix and vermicelli. Most of these products were only on display at the stalls and not for sale, leaving visitors disappointed. Satish Kumar, senior research fellow, University of Agricultural Sciences, Bengaluru, said the grain is gaining prominence as several families have begun replacing rice with it. Yogish Appajaiah, an organiser, said maida, refined sugar, oil and salt were not used in making these food products. Manjunatha K L, another organiser, said people could buy directly from growers who had come from four districts of Karnataka. There is also exhibition and sale of millet-processed products, awareness talks, film screening on millet farming and its benefits and seeds for cultivation, he said.
