Scientists recreate Mona Lisa painting using live bacteria 15.8.2018 DNA: Opinion
Scientists have created an accurate millimetric replica of Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa, using approximately one million bacteria cells that were genetically engineered to respond to light. The researchers used light patterns to control the swimming speed of bacteria and direct them to form different shapes. Controlling bacteria in this way means it could be possible to use them as microbricks for building the next generation of microscopic devices. For example, they could be made to surround a larger object such as a machine part or a drug carrier, and then used as living propellers to transport it where it is needed, researchers said. Escherichia coli (E coli) bacteria are known to be fantastic swimmers. They can move a distance of ten times their length in a second. They have propellers that are powered by a motor, and they usually recharge this motor by a process that needs oxygen. Recently, scientists found a protein (proteorhodopsin) in ocean-dwelling bacteria that allows them to power their ...

Tokyo unscathed as weakening typhoon brushes by, heads north 9.8.2018 DNA: Mumbai
Japan's capital of Tokyo was unscathed on Thursday after a weakening typhoon brushed by it and headed north, pounding the coastline with rain and high winds, with scores of cancelled flights, and some power outages, in its wake. Though typhoon "Shanshan," a Chinese girl's name, had been predicted to possibly make landfall near Tokyo, a northeasterly twist to its course kept it out at sea and spared the capital more than high winds and heavy rains, which had mostly dissipated by morning. By late morning the centre of the storm was in the Pacific just off the city of Mito, about 100 km (62 miles) northeast of Tokyo, and set to weaken to tropical storm strength within hours as it moves further east into the Pacific. Around 100 domestic flights were cancelled and some trains, and there were about 2,000 households without power, but Tokyo's vast transportation system was operating mostly as usual. Japan has suffered from one weather disaster after another in the last six weeks, including a deadly heatwave ...

How Vasundhara Raje and her rath get the pulse of people 8.8.2018 DNA: Recent Columns
The drizzle catches up with you on the sly and breaks the spell of fog-mantled slopes that stand guard to the quiet and surprisingly clean town of Dungarpur. All roads seem to lead to one spectacular event that possibly even the Roman emperors in their bid to wean away the hungry people from an ambitious senate couldn’t match with their notoriously bloody Colosseum contests.  The roads guiding you to the Udai Bilas Hotel where chief minister Vasundhara Raje has stayed the night are swarming with police. The rath, like her, is rested there. The road which she would take to Banswara is dotted with Swagat Dwars where locals, workers and officials from the administration have queued up to see the yatra through. Inside, the plush hotel, a battery of BJP workers and leaders give way to Raje as she heads towards the rath which has now revved up. After a casual banter with journalists she takes the stairs and disappears into the air-cooled confines of rath. The engine groans for a moment as the rath pulls itself ...

Expose bogus achche din claims: Rahul Gandhi 8.8.2018 DNA: Recent Columns
Congress president Rahul Gandhi, in his maiden speech at the parliamentary party meeting on Tuesday, stepped up attack against Narendra Modi-led NDA government and asked the party cadre to expose the false promise of achche din by the Prime Minister. Terming the Modi government a ‘failed’ one on all fronts, Gandhi said the forces of hate, division and violence who are ‘trampling upon’ the Constitution should be prevented from returning to power. “There is a rising tide of anger against the ruling dispensation that demands all of us to work very hard to give the people an alternative to the bogus promise of achche din,’’ Gandhi said. “The people are looking up to the Congress and its allies to help remove the Modi government and replace it with one which will listen to them, understand their problems and provide solutions that reduce poverty, unemployment and inequality,” said Rahul adding it was for the Congress to restore hope in farmers and youth, right to dignified life and decent income. From the ...
