Pakistan is China's client state', says US report 21.4.2018 General News

Saudis see oil price on rise as Trump blasts OPEC 20.4.2018 General News
Saudi Energy Minister Khaled al-Faleh said today the global market has the capacity to absorb higher oil prices, drawing a swift reaction from US President Donald Trump who accused OPEC of inflating prices. Faleh's statement at a meeting of oil producers in Saudi Arabia came as crude hit the highest level in more than three years. "Looks like OPEC is at it again," Trump tweeted. "With record amounts of Oil all over the place, including the fully loaded ships at sea, Oil prices are artificially Very High! No good and will not be accepted!" Oil has rebounded to over USD 70 a barrel, after prices crashed to as low as USD 26 in January 2016. "I have not seen any impact on demand with current prices," Faleh told reporters, ahead of a ministerial committee for OPEC and non-OPEC producers. "Reduced energy intensity and higher productivity globally of energy input leads me to think that there is the capacity to absorb higher prices," he said. Russia sees 'solid foundation' for extending oil alliance 20.4.2018 General News
Russia said there was a "very solid foundation" for extending cooperation between OPEC and non-OPEC countries at a meeting Friday of oil producers in Saudi Arabia. Oil kingpin Saudi Arabia said a "consensus" was emerging for a long-term cooperation agreement. "We have created a very solid foundation for cooperation between OPEC and non-OPEC countries in the future even beyond the declaration of cooperation," Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak said in the Saudi Red Sea city of Jeddah. He was referring to a cooperation agreement between the 14-member OPEC cartel and 10 non-OPEC producers, led by Russia, to cut oil production by 1.8 million barrels per day to reduce oversupply. The deal -- which is due to run out at the end of 2018 -- has succeeded in reducing a global glut of oil and pushed prices to over USD 70 a barrel from less than USD 30 in January 2016. "Both consumers and producers of oil are expecting us to retain this solidarity to ensure stability and growth of the ...

Researchers: Silk Road projects give China strategic benefit 18.4.2018 General News
A massive Chinese infrastructure programme that Beijing says is aimed at promoting global trade and economic growth is actually intended to expand the country's political influence and military presence, according to a report. The report issued yesterday by the US-based research group C4ADS questions China's portrayal of the trillion-dollar programme, called the "Belt and Road Initiative," as strictly meant to promote economic development. President Xi Jinping's signature foreign policy programme, it is working to reinforce China's links to Southeast Asia, Europe and Africa through networks of roads, ports, railways, power plants and other infrastructure projects. C4ADS, a nonprofit research institute that specializes in data analysis and security, examined official Chinese policy documents and unofficial reports by Chinese analysts to analyze the intentions of Beijing's ambitious economic development programme, which seeks to connect 65 per cent of the world's population in more than

China could leverage BRI projects to "coerce" nations to deny US forces basing: US admiral 18.4.2018 General News
China could leverage BRI projects to "coerce" nations to deny US forces basing, transit, or operational and logistical support as part of a long-term strategy to reduce America's influence and become the "clear regional hegemon", a top American admiral has warned. China's massive Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), a pet project of President Xi Jinping seeks to build rail, maritime and road links from Asia to Europe and Africa in a revival of ancient Silk Road trading routes. Admiral Philip S Davidson, the nominee for US Pacific Command Commander, told members of the Senate Armed Services Committee during his confirmation hearing that China wanted to project power worldwide. "China's expanding global interests, especially its Belt and Road Initiative-associated projects, have Beijing increasingly looking beyond the region," he said. "China is expanding its access to foreign ports to pre-position the necessary logistics support required to regularise and sustain deployments in the Indian ..
