Why Gujarat poll dates not announced, need 'credible answers' from EC: JD(U) Gen Secy Pavan Varma 16.10.2017 DNA: India
In a set of tweets, that can potentially cast a shadow over relationship between BJP and its ally JD(U), the general secretary of Niitish Kumar's party, Pavan Varma has raised questions about EC not announcing dates for Gujarat polls.  EC in a press conference last week announced dates for Himachal Elections, but refused to divulge the Gujarat dates. It merely said that the polling process will be finished before 18th December. Opposition leaders have alleged that EC held back on the announcement of dates as PM Modi was scheduled to travel to Gujarat and announce a slew of projects. Now adding to the noise, Varma who is part of ruling NDA has expressed reservation over EC's decision. He tweeted, "   "EC must not only be impartial but seen to be so. Why have the dates for Gujarat elections not been announced? We need credible answers," he tweeted. In another tweet, he said, India’s steep fall in the Global Hunger Index-from 55 in 2014 to 100 in 2017 begs the q: who is the ‘fastest growing’ economy working ...

Anandiben Patel says won't contest LS polls 10.10.2017 DNA: Opinion
In a move that could wrap up a three-decades-long political career which saw her become the first woman chief minister of Gujarat, Anandiben Patel has written to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Amit Shah expressing her desire not to contest the upcoming assembly elections. In a letter to Shah on October 4, Ben, as she is popularly known, cited the BJP's unwritten rule that those above 75 do not hold a position in the party or the government. In August last year, Anandiben had announced her resignation as chief minister on Facebook, saying she she was turning 75 in November and had decided to step down from the post. Her resignation came at the height of the reservation stir by the Patel community — an issue that continues to rankle the BJP government in the state. At the time, her handling of the protests had come under severe criticism. In the letter to Shah, Patel requested that the party field an active BJP worker from the Ghatlodia assembly seat. She had won from the seat in 2012 with a margin ...

Gujarat Elections 2017: Anandiben Patel writes to Amit Shah, says unwilling to contest 9.10.2017 DNA: Money
Former Gujarat chief minister Anandiben Patel has said she does not want to contest the upcoming state Assembly polls and that she has informed BJP president Amit Shah about her decision in a letter. The letter was written on October 4, but released today. Patel's letter to Shah comes at a time when the BJP is in the process of forming three-member panels for each of the Assembly constituencies in the state to select the party candidates for the Assembly polls due later this year. Some party workers have reportedly suggested that Patel (75), a sitting BJP MLA, be fielded from her current constituency, Ghatlodiya in Ahmedabad district. There has been a demand from a section of the BJP to declare the veteran politician as the party's chief ministerial face in Gujarat, which is witnessing a quota agitation by the Patel community. A tweet by BJP leader Subramanian Swamy, asking the party to make Patel the chief ministerial face in Gujarat had led to speculation about the former chief minister once again ...
