Admissions for first year of degree colleges will resume and the second merit list will be declared on Saturday, July 14, announced University of Mumbai (MU) on Friday. The decision to resume the admission process comes after the Supreme Court dismissed the Special Leave Petition (SLP) filed by the Maharashtra State government and MU challenging Bombay High Court's decision to quash reservation for students from backward categories in minority institutions. MU has issued a revised schedule for the admission process, which was halted by the State after the first merit list was declared. The second merit list, which was scheduled for June 22 which will now be declared on July 14, and third and final merit list will be out on July 18. "This is a big relief to students," said Ashok Wadia, principal of Jai Hind College in Churchgate, adding, "We will start the admission process as soon as the university sends us the revised schedule." Unless the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) submits documents to prove its minority status by August, it will be ordered by the National Commission for Scheduled Castes to implement the reservation policy, as required by all central universities, the Indian Express reported on Friday. Panel chairperson Ram Shankar Katheria, who is also a BJP MP from Agra confirmed the same. “This is not Pakistan, the university has to follow the rules,” he said. Katheria said that the HRD Ministry, UGC and the National Commission for Minorities have confirmed that the AMU does not enjoy minority status. In 2016, the central government approached the Supreme Court, stating the AMU is not a minority institution, and the matter is pending. The counselling for the admission to the undergraduate medical courses under the All India and Tamil Nadu quota seats will come to a standstill in the view of the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court asking the CBSE to grant 196 grace marks for the 49 erroneously translated questions in the Tamil version of the entrance exam. The court directed the board to publish a revised ranking list in two weeks. A division bench comprising Justices CT Selvam and AM Basheer Ahamed, hearing a PIL filed by CPI (M) MP TK Rangarajan, has stayed all the current proceedings. Gujarat: 20,757 students make it to final merit list in medical admissions 28.6.2018 DNA: Recent Columns
Out of a total of 25,836 students registered with The Admission Committee for Professional Undergraduate Medical Educational Courses (ACPUGMEC), 20,757 made it to the final merit list, and 4,629 students got disqualified. On Monday, the ACPUGMEC stated that more than 1,100 students registered without domicile certificates. The choice filling process will be held on June 29-30. On July 1, the results will be declared. Students will have to pay their fees and confirm admissions by July 11. The ACPUGMEC is the nodal agency conducting admissions in Gujarat, to MBBS, BDS and other medical education courses in the state. Candidates who want to apply in local quota seats of NHL Municipal medical college Ahmedabad or Surat Municipal Institute of Medical Education & Research must obtain a certificate that student is a local student of Ahmedabad or Surat city from deans of respective institutes.
