SC Judge Chelameswar pushes for more women in elected bodies 24.9.2017 DNA: Top News
Supreme Court Justice Jasti Chelameswar on Saturday said women need to have sufficient representation in politics to improve their condition in the country. "The solution to the discrimination and injustice to women lies in the political power. Why don't women have equal say in Parliament or any elected other elected body? Time has come for women to build pressure on parties so that they share power equally," said Justice Chelameswar. He was delivering a speech at the National Conference of the All India Federation of Women Lawyers (AIFWL) in the city. "Empowerment comes from strength and power. Learn Karate for physical strngth and for social empowerment, you need to have equal say in the political power. There should be a minimum of 300 women members in the Loksabha. Is it not surprising that males have major control." He went on to suggest that there should be 50 per cent of women elected representatives. At the same time, he clarified that he is not advocating for reservation but of right. He also ...

Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel told media persons on Thursday that the government will soon be extending an invitation to Hardik and his colleagues and other leaders of the Patel community for the meeting. Sonia Gandhi reaches out to Modi on women's bill 22.9.2017 DNA: Top News
Congress president Sonia Gandhi has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging him to use the BJP's majority in the Lok Sabha and ensure the passage of the long-pending Women's Reservation Bill. The Bill was passed in the Rajya Sabha in 2010 during the Congress-led UPA's rule, but it has not been tabled in the Lower House since then. The legislation guarantees 33 per cent reservation to women in the Lok Sabha and state Assemblies, ensuring a stronger women's voice at the top that is expected to lead to policies and laws to help fight abuse, discrimination and inequality. Sonia wrote the letter on Wednesday evening, amid a buzz within the Congress that she might end her 19-year tenure as party president by October 31 in favour of her son Rahul Gandhi. "I am writing to request you to take advantage of your majority in the Lok Sabha to now get the Women's Reservation Bill Passed in the Lower House as well," she said in the letter, adding that the Bill has languished in the Lok Sabha for one reason or ...

To recapture political narrative, govt looking at Women's Reservation Bill 19.9.2017 Business Standard: News Now
New Delhi, 19 SeptemberIn an effort to seize back the political narrative that is slipping away because of steep oil prices, lack of job growth and economic downturn, the Narendra Modi government is mulling bringing the women's reservation Bill in the winter session of Parliament. The Bill provides for reserving a third of all seats for women in the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies, including in the seats reserved for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. The Bill has had a tortuous history. It was first introduced in 1996, and lapsed thrice with the dissolution of the respective Lok Sabhas. It was passed by the Rajya Sabha in 2010 during the Congress-led UPA2 regime. Its passage in the Lok Sabha was resisted by allies of the Congress. But unlike the Lok Sabha, the Rajya Sabha is a continuous House and the Bill is pending with the House.Sources said a final decision is yet to be taken but consultations are on and the leadership is keen to build on the Prime Minister's 'Beti .

Mayawati drop a bombshell; claims BJP hatched plot to assassinate her during Saharanpur riots 18.9.2017 DNA: Wide Angle
Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati on Monday dropped a bombshell, alleging that the BJP had plotted her assassination during the Saharanpur riots that took place in April this year. Addressing a rally and workers’ convention in Meerut, the former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister claimed that the BJP had hatched the conspiracy to assassinate her after she resigned from her position in the Rajya Sabha, following the Saharanpur riots. She further alleged that the BJP had engineered the riots to divert the people’s attention from the issue of tampering of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) during the state assembly polls, which saw the BJP win a record 325 seats. “The violence in Shabbirpur was escalated, thanks to the BJP and its supporters just to divert the attention from the EVM tampering allegation,” she alleged. She further claimed that the BJP had hatched a plan after they found out that she would be visiting the riot-hit area. “The plan was that Mayawati would visit riot-hit Shabbirpur and give ...
