Molecule shaped like Olympic rings created 21.2.2018 General News
Scientists have synthesised olympicene - a highly versatile hydrocarbon molecule shaped like the Olympic Games logo. Olympicenes are like the decathletes of nanoscale molecules. Their range of potential applications include sophisticated sensors, information and energy storage, solar cells and high-tech LEDs. "An olympicene is a molecule consisting of five rings that resemble the shape of the famous Olympic rings," said Igor Alabugin, professor at Florida State University (FSU) in the US. "This new process for synthesising these molecules offers a unique tool for the preparation of structurally precise carbon-rich nanostructures," said Alabugin. The first olympicene molecule was unveiled by British chemists in anticipation of the 2012 London Olympics. Until now, synthesising these unique structures was only possible through an arduous and intensive seven-step process based largely on chemistry dating back to the 1960s. Using a new technique described in the study published in the ...

New energy choices -The growing need of the hour 20.2.2018 General News
The balance between development and environment is the biggest challenge for humanity today; the demand of such models of development across the world is increasing, which can meet our current needs without harming the environment.India is one of the emerging economies of the world, but we still depend primarily on coal, petroleum and natural gas and oil for our energy needs, which have their limitations; firstly they are way too expensive for the common man to have easy access to and secondly, they emit carbon in large quantities. These options are not sustainable either; at the rate at which these natural resources of energy are being utilized they will soon be over and would take centuries to rebuild again. It is bound to affect the environment as well as future generations. In such a situation, it is time to move towards the new options of energy, which can restrain the indiscriminate exploitation of natural resources and make access to affordable and sustainable energy for ...

It said the initiative by India has been widely acknowledged worldwide as a commendable proactive vision which has endeavoured to synergies Intellectual Property with Indias various policy initiatives. Asserting that India has a well-established legislative, administrative and judicial framework for safeguarding Intellectual Property Rights, the FICCI said the IP scenario in India has undergone a number of significant developments with respect to laws and ...

India Rating maintains negative outlook on thermal power 19.2.2018 General News
India Rating and Research (Ind-Ra) has maintained a negative outlook on the thermal power sector for the fiscal 2018-19, due to lack of visibility with respect to long-term PPAs. The ratings agency, in a report, also maintained a stable outlook on the solar sector and revised its outlook on the wind sector to stable from negative for the next financial year. The report said that the existing excess power tie-up of discoms and PPAs already signed with Central and state sector generating companies, for buying power from 40 GW under construction thermal plants, preclude the need for purchasing power from private thermal plants, under long-term PPAs. Speaking about renewables, Ind-Ra said it anticipates favourable environment for wind and solar energy sectors, as bids are being driven by Central government agencies, and power purchase agreements (PPAs) becoming favourable to developers. "Development of guarantee funds by states/bidders, incentives to local solar panel ...
