Western sanctions hitting import of medicines for diseases including multiple sclerosis and cancer, charity warns Millions of lives are at risk in Iran because western economic sanctions are hitting the importing of medicines and hospital equipment, the country's top medical charity has warned. Fatemeh Hashemi, head of the Charity Foundation for Special Diseases, a non-government organisation supporting six million patients in Iran, has complained about a serious shortage of medicines for a number of diseases such as haemophilia, multiple sclerosis and cancer. Sanctions over Tehran's nuclear programme are not directly targeting hospitals but measures imposed on banks and trade restrictions have made life difficult for patients, according to Hashemi, the daughter of former Iranian president Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani. FMCG major ITC today became the most influential stock on BSE benchmark Sensex, pushing energy giant Reliance Industries to the second spot. At the end of today's trade, ITC commanded 10.01 per cent weight, while RIL had 9.07 per cent weight, followed by ICICI Bank which had 7.66 per cent weight in 30-share Sensex. A stock's weight in Sensex is measured by the value of a company's free-float or non-promoter shares that can be freely traded in the market. Shares of ITC settled 0.81 per cent higher at Rs 287.60 on the BSE, while RIL fell by 0.97 per cent to Rs 805.40. RIL shares have been under pressure since last three days as weak quarterly earnings remained a worry, said analysts. Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) on Monday reported its fourth consecutive drop in quarterly net profit, hurt by weak demand and lower natural gas output, but sequentially its earnings had rebounded. Ecuadorean plaintiffs say they have made first step towards collecting $19bn in damages from the US oil company Ecuadorean plaintiffs on Tuesday said an order issued by a court in the Andean country lets them seize $200m (£124m) worth of assets belonging to Chevron in a new legal blow to the US oil company. The plaintiffs from villages in the oil-rich Amazon won an $18.2bn case against the oil giant over claims that Texaco, bought by Chevron in 2001, contaminated the area from 1964 to 1992. Damages were increased to $19bn in July. Among the assets ordered turned over are $96.3m that Ecuador's government owes Chevron, money held in Ecuadorean bank accounts by Chevron, and licensing fees generated by the use of the company's trademarks in the country, the plaintiffs said.
