1962- When Vajpayee suffered a shock defeat in Lok Sabha from Balrampur 17.8.2018 DNA: Top News
Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the rising star in Jan Sangh, whose debut speech in Parliament even impressed Pandit Nehru, suffered a shock defeat from Balrampur in Uttar Pradesh in 1962. Balrampur most famous for its sugar handed a bitter loss to Vajpayee who lost to Subhadra Joshi of Congress. Vajpayee's first foray in electoral politics was in 1953 , when he lost Lok Sabha byelection from Lucknow. In the 1957 Lok Sabha election, Vajpayee had contested from Balrampur, Lucknow and Mathura. He lost badly in Mathura, fell short in Lucknow but won against  Hyder Hussain of Congress by around 10 thousand votes from Balrampur. In the next election, Congress roped in Gandhian Subhadra Joshi. Incidentally, both Vajpayee and Joshi had their first brush with activism during the 1943 Quit India movement. But ideologically both were in separate poles. Five elections, enduring legacy: Vajpayee's Lucknow connection 17.8.2018 DNA: India
Former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee shared a special connection with Lucknow, representing the Uttar Pradesh capital in the Lok Sabha for five consecutive terms. Congress nominee Ranjeet Singh was the first one to be humbled in Lucknow by Vajpayee when he fought for the seat in 1991. Singh is now dead but a friend, Alok Kumar, recently recalled that contest. Atal's stature was undoubtedly taller compared to the other candidates," he told PTI, even while insisting that the Ram Temple movement made it easier for the Bharatiya Janata Party leader. His friend got only 20 per cent of the vote in that election, Vajpayee got 51 per cent. Apart from 1991, Vajpayee was elected to the Lok Sabha from Lucknow in 1996, 1998, 1999 and 2004. Among those who decided to take him from there have included Congress stalwart Karan Singh, current Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Raj Babbar and filmmaker Muzaffar Ali. BJP leaders make it a point to stress his Lucknow connection. On August 5, Union Home Minister Rajnath ...

Atal Bihari Vajpayee was a visionary with hands on pulse of masses: RSS ideologue KN Govindacharya 16.8.2018 DNA: Opinion
Rashtriya Swamsevak Sangh ideologue KN Govindacharya and India's former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee go a long way. Before the demise of Vajpayee on Thursday, Govindacharya spoke with Zee media about the Bharatiya Janata Party's patriarch, his personality, and the political career he witnessed. Govindacharya and Vajpayee stayed connected through the formative years of Janangh through the 1970s until 1988. During that time, the ideologue recalled, ABV emphasised on pushing for Bihar agitation minus the violence. He also talked about what was the gravitas of 'Atal Faisla' (unbreakable promise). ABV had sternly asked BJP officials at the time of 1989 general elections on what basis were they asking for more seats in Uttar Pradesh. Govindacharya revealed that ABV made them see that this haggling over more seats will ruin the party's image. Nobody disagreed with Vajpayee after that. He said, "Vajpayee always believed in teamwork and he understood the pulse of people." Remembering the time after 2004 ...

Former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has begun all preparations for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Akhilesh, along with members of the Samajwadi Party, will kick-off a cycle yatra that begins from Uttar Pradesh’s Kannauj town that will be 50 kilometres.  The rally will also feature the family of "Khajanchi", a child born in a queue outside a bank soon after demonetisation, a party spokesman said on Tuesday. The Samajwadi Party will wave its flag to the family before the rally begins. Earlier, Khajanchi was born in a queue after Prime Minister Narendra Modi had imposed the note ban in November 2016. The note ban did away with old Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes. Named "Khajanchi" (treasurer), the child's family was given a house under the Lohia Awas Scheme by the then state government. Akhilesh had in 2017 adopted Khajanchi’s village a year later. The Samajwadi Party lost 184 seats during the 2017 Uttar Pradesh Assembly Elections, ending up with only 54 seats. The BJP campaign, which was ...
