Men in some Jaisalmer and Barmer villages have been facing prolonged bachelorhood as they struggle to find prospective life partners due to scarcity of basic amenities. Even after seven decades of independence, dozens of villages which come under the area of Desert National Park which is spread over about 3162 sq km have no basic amenities like electricity and water. People have to travel miles to get drinking water from wells. People are turning down marriages proposals  for their daughters from young men of these villages because of hardships. This is the reason why  the number of bachelors in these areas is increasing continuously. Due to lack of roads in many villages, even today, people are forced to travel on bullock carts and camels. Many villages are still completely cut off from other areas of the country in the field of telecommunications. Former Sullia MLA Bakila Hukrappa passes away 20.11.2017 Deccan Herald - State

Former Sullia MLA Bakila Hukrappa died following a prolonged illness at his house here on Monday morning. He was aged 68.

He is survived by wife, two daughters, and a son.

Hukrappa had entered the Legislative Assembly in 1983 on BJP ticket from Sullia, an SC reserved constituency. In 1985, contesting on Janata Party ticket he lost. Hukrappa later joined Congress, had a brief stint with JD(S) and Aam Aadmi Party.

After several electoral setbacks, Hukrappa resumed his dail wage work at areca farms. Interestingly, in 2010, he was elected as member of Guttigaaru gram panchayat in Sullia taluk.

Six years after the launch of the National Optical Fiber Network (NOFN) to connect 2.5 lakh gram panchayats (GPs) with high speed broadband, the first phase, meant to connect 1 lakh GPs, is yet to be completed. Kicked off by the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) II on October 25, 2011, the nearly Rs 20,000-crore project was expected to be finished in two years but procedural delays along with coordination issues between the implementing agencies pushed the deadline to 2015. Then the Narendra Modi-led government re-examined the project and renamed it BharatNet in 2015. A new deadline of December, 2016, was fixed, which was later pushed to March, 2017. Then it became December, 2017. For the second and the final phase, the deadline is March, 2019. The delays have resulted in overruns, taking the project cost to a steep Rs 45,000 crore.
