The Calcutta High Court today took note of allegations that candidates were being prevented from reaching the nomination filing office and directed the State Election Commission (SEC) to ensure that poll nominations of 11 candidates are filed in a gram panchayat. The court said that the commission would lie in contempt if the order was not executed. Justice Subrata Talukdar, on whose order the SEC extended the nomination process by a day for today, directed the commission to file a compliance report tomorrow. The direction was passed on a plea by one Sharmistha Chowdhury representing 11 candidates for Polerhat II gram panchayat in South 24 Parganas district that despite the court's order extending the nomination day, candidates were not being allowed to reach the BDO office by armed hooligans. Congress president Rahul Gandhi will today launch the party's nationwide 'Save the Constitution' campaign, aiming to highlight alleged attacks on the Constitution and Dalits under the BJP-led regime. Seen as the party's effort to reach out to the community ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, the campaign launch is expected to be attended by former prime minister Manmohan Singh, party general secretary Ghulam Nabi Azad, its senior leaders Mallikarjun Kharge, Sushil Kumar Shinde among others. The campaign will continue till next year's April 14, the birth anniversary of Dalit icon Bhim Rao Ambedkar. Congress's present and former Dalit lawmakers, those holding offices in zilla parishad, civic bodies and panchayat samitis, the party's office-bearers attached to its regional units will also attend the event, aimed at sensitising people on the current state of affairs with regard to the community.

The central government has declared Digambarpur gram panchayat in South 24 Parganas district as the best panchayat in the country. "We feel proud that we have the best panchayat. Zilla Parishad candidate found hanging 21.4.2018 General News
A Jharkhand Disam Party candidate for Zilla Parishad election was found hanging at her home in Gajol area of Malda district, police said today. Family members of Kankana Bala (22) suspected that she committed suicide yesterday following threats by some political party. Bala was a college student and an ICDS worker, police said. She had filed her nomination for the Malda Zilla Parishad in the three-tier panchayat election. Police said they started an investigation and seized her mobile phone to probe the threat angle. There had been allegations that candidates backed by opposition parties were being threatened and prevented from filing nominations for panchayat polls. The Calcutta High Court yesterday directed the State Election Commission to reschedule the dates for panchayat election process and accordingly conduct the polls.
