Gujarat first state to get full CCTV cover 8.9.2017 DNA: Recent Columns
With the aim of curbing crimes through surveillance and better system of traffic management, the state government has finalised a plan to bring all cities and major religious destinations in the state under extensive CCTV coverage. Home Minister Pradipsinh Jadeja said that 34 cities and six religious destinations in the state will be equipped with CCTV network. "Good work is being done under the Smart City project in Ahmedabad, Surat, Rajkot, Vadodara and Bhavnagar. The Gujarat government is taking this one step ahead to bring the remaining parts of the state under CCTV coverage with the installation of 7,463 CCTV cameras under the Safe & Secure Gujarat project," Jadeja said. Jadeja said a Letter of Intent had been issued on September 5 to execute the Safe & Secure Gujarat project at a cost of Rs 245 crore, and the work would be completed in a time bound manner in the near future. Davangere and Belagavi lag behind, while Nagpur and Indore have bagged the first and second place in the country, in the implementation of the Smart Cities project. According to the urban development ministry, five other cities from South India announced in the first batch of 20 Smart Cities in January 2016, Kochi (Kerala), Visakhapatnam and Kakinada (Andhra Pradesh), Coimbatore and Chennai (Tamil Nadu) too have failed to catch up in the race for the execution of projects. Ahead of the completion of two years of the Smart Cities mission in June 2017, the ministry analysed the investment conversion ratio (ICR) of each city. ICR indicates the extent of conversion of approved Smart City plans into investments through ground-level implementation. ICR also shows the percentage of funds currently being used at the ground level for implementing the projects as against the funds approved by the Centre.
