As Jaipur turns smart, a princess is being remembered 21.5.2018 DNA: Popular News
The year was 2008 and a frail 88-year-old woman was staging a sit in behind the Moti Dungri temple. She was opposing the construction of a multi-storey on that piece of prime land.  Breathing fire, she had gone on record to rechristen Jaipur Development Authority (JDA) as Jaipur ‘Destruction’ Authority. She was the Rajmata of Jaipur, Maharani Gayatri Devi, deeply connected to the city, its people and heritage and had never shied from standing up for the city and its people.  Cut to the present. A 40-feet stretch of road caved in near Bad Ke Balaji at Kishanpole Bazar a few days during ongoing digging for Smart City project. People moved on and about their daily chores.  Earlier, they had come up to protest the dismantling of old chowks (market squares), the prized motifs of the heritage city, that were uprooted to pave way for the Metro.  Gayatri Devi had even protested felling of the old banyan and peepal trees. “She would never have sat and watched what is going on. She stood against felling of trees ...

Jaipur: Kishanpole Bazar road caves in, no one hurt 17.5.2018 DNA: Opinion
The road near Bad Ke Balaji at Kishanpole Bazar caved in during the excavation work going on for Smart City projects.  The officials immediately put mud sacks along the wall of the collapsed portion to avoid further shredding of the road. Even as no one was reported to be injured, traffic on the much busy road had to be diverted. Officials of the Jaipur Smart City Limited were unavailable for comment on the incident, though residents already protesting the Smart City works were quick to respond. “The Smart City project has become as a bane rather than a boon for the Walled City and its heritage. The officials have no plan and the recent incident too is a reflection of their negligence which has put public life in danger,” said an official of the Dharohar Bachao Samiti. There are cement grids being laid along the bazaar for multipurpose ducts. The road caved in the area which was dug up for laying the duct. Although not much damage has been done to the road, cracks are visible. Even as JSCL officials ...

Dark clouds hover over Jaipur Smart City Project 10.5.2018 DNA: Popular News
Traffic struggles at the Kishanpole Bazar as ongoing Smart City works reduce the road width to a single lane. The Jaipur Smart City Limited (JSCL) have initiated laying cobblestone pavements within Walled City area from Kishanpole, however, it is faced with resistance and several locals, social and trader organisations gear up for collective agitation. JSCL has been looking to pitch in local MLAs to help develop consensus among the public, however, the opposing groups allege the Smart City works to be a ‘scam’ and threat to heritage. “The officials are motivated to dispose of the funds issued by the Central government for Smart City, however, the projects have been distorting the heritage of the city,” says Bharat Sharma of Dharohar Bachao Samiti. The cobbled stone pavement being laid protrudes the existing corridors and is little above the road level. Those protesting the move say it will not only reduce the road width but will facilitate encroachment of the corridors. They are also displeased with ...

JMC Politics not a hurdle for Smart City Development: Ravi Jain 23.3.2018 DNA: Wide Angle
Are you satisfied with the progress of Smart city Project? Yes. We are satisfied with its pace. Recently, UDH secretary from Centre Durga Shankar Mishra had come to review the project.  JSCL has already completed projects worth Rs 110 crore in Jaipur, work order of projects worth Rs 537 crore has already been issued and to take the smart city forward we have also completed the tendering process of new projects worth Rs 340 crore. So far projects worth Rs 2400 crore have already taken. Don’t you think model of having one nodal agency for development works in a city helps – the way we have in Amravati (Maharashtra) and Naya Raipur (Chhattisgarh)? You are absolutely right. It really helps if we have a single point of contact where all civic related problems can be addressed. It’s very important to have close coordination between various departments like JDA, JMC, BSNL and JVVNL for smooth development. Every time there are news that you and the Mayor Ashok Lahoti are not getting along well. He has even ...
