Arunachal Pradesh's Pasighat has now been put on country's commercial aviation map after national carrier Air India for the first time touched the airport here on Monday.The Alliance aircraft, a subsidiary of Air India, flew from Guwahati to Pasighat with Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu as the first passenger.It is for the first time since independence that a commercial flight landed just 300 km away from the Indo - China border.Due to its strategic location, the airport was originally an Advance Landing Ground (ALG) which has mostly been used by the Army or the Air Force.Now, it is open for civil aviation services too.To the passengers, the distance of 650 km between Guwahati and Pasighat will cost around Rs 3,000.Earlier, people had to travel from Guwahati or via Itanagar for almost a day in the hilly terrain to reach the place, which is the headquarters of East Siang district.The flight from Pasighat would reportedly operate to and fro, three times a week.Initially, it

The Meghalaya government is exploring the possibility of having additional roads in the Guwahati-Shillong route to minimise the vibration caused by vehicular traffic causing harm to the wall of the Umiam hyro-electric dam, the assembly was informed today. The Central Water Commission (CWC) recently expressed concern about the safety of the Umiam concrete dam saying the government may give priority to take up an alternative road, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said. Presently every vehicle coming from Guwahati side has to pass the 220 sq km scenic lake, a tourist attraction, and everyday thousands of vehicles ply by the dam, the first and the main hydro electric project in the state. "We are looking at the possibility of having multiple entry-exit points in the state. The CWC has advised that traffic is to be diverted downstream of the Umiam dam," Sangma said in his reply to the debate on governor's address. The issue of diversion of traffic on Umiam dam, located around 15 .

Assam government will spend Rs 2.58 crore to set up a high-mast National Flag here as part of the Smart City project, a state minister said today. Guwahati Development Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma told the Assam Assembly that a total of 13 schemes and infrastructure development projects are being carried out to transform the state capital into a Smart City. Sarma said the sanctioned cost for completing 12 projects is Rs 2,303.50 crore, while no amount has been fixed yet for the City Operation Centre. Out of this, Rs 2.58 crore has been earmarked for implementing the high-mast national flag construction project in Guwahati. "The work has been allotted after completing the tender process," he said, without giving any further detail. The highest amount of Rs 826 crore will be spent for the overall development of Brahmaputra riverside along the city, and the Detailed Project Report (DPR) is being prepared for it, the minister said.
