While six Byculla jail officials are facing imprisonment over the custodial death of deceased inmate Manjula Shetye, the jail authorities in Maharashtra are now taking the initiative to provide counselling to their staff in dealing with inmates. This could help prevent similar incidents in the future. The state jail officials have also decided to construct more barracks in existing jails to address the issue of overcrowding. The six jail officials have been accused of fatally assaulting murder convict Manjula Shetye last month. Speaking to DNA, Bhushan Kumar Upadhyay, Additional Director General of Police (Prisons) said, "The incident (of Shetye's custodial death) is not a result of the failure of the prison system. It occurred due to the mistake of a few people. We are taking preventive measures to prevent similar incidents in the future." The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) registered a case regarding the gang-rape and murder of a 16-year-old girl in Shimla and started investigating the matter. The agency has also filed a case into the custodial death of the accused of gang-rape incident. The incident drew public outrage with shops, offices and schools being closed in Shimla protesting mishandling the case. They agency took over the cases on the orders of Himachal Pradesh High Court. The HC has asked CBI to form a special team to investigate the case. Following the death of the accused in police custody, the state government has issued transfer orders to seven police officers who were investigating the gang-rape and murder case.
