Under pressure from the civil society in Bodoland, the Centre has decided to hold an independent inquiry into CRPF Inspector General Rajnish Rai's report alleging that two terrorists of National Democratic Front-Songbjit faction (NDFB-S) were killed in a staged-managed encounter by the Army, Assam Police, SSB and his own Force. "An inquiry will be initiated soon under a retired DG level officer to find out veracity in Rai's report. The decision to choose a retired DG has been taken keep the inquiry independent of any bias," said a senior Home ministry source. Rai's report, raising questions on the joint operation that reflects how systems and processes have weakened over a period of time, resulting in commission of such unlawful acts, had asked to entrust the investigation to an external independent agency for impartial and thorough investigation of the encounter. Four militants were killed after CRPF troopers repelled a fidayeen (suicide) attack on their camp in Sumbal area of north Kashmir's Bandipora district during the early hours of Monday. Sources said the heavily armed militants, believed to be Pakistanis, tried to enter the camp of 45 Battalion around 4.10 am by lobbying grenades and opening fire. "The alert sentries retaliated, triggering a brief gunfight in which all the four fidayeen were killed," a source said. The identity of the slain militants was yet to be ascertained.
