Five people were killed and as many as 20 sustained injuries after a goods vehicle ran into a religious procession near Kashettipalli village in Srinivaspur taluk on Tuesday night.

According to police, a special puja was organised praying for rains in the village on Tuesday night. The devotees were returning to their village along with the idol of the God in a procession, when the goods vehicle rammed into them.

Sriramappa (60) died on the spot while Manjunath (30), Kishore (19), Srinath (19) and Prabhakar Reddy (35) breathed last in the hospital. The idol of the God stuck to the vehicle in the accident and driver fled the spot along with the vehicle, eyewitnesses said.

Gownipalli police, who were informed about the accident, intercepted the vehicle near Lakshmipura Cross. However, the driver managed to escape abandoning the vehicle.

The 14th Fast Track Court on Wednesday awarded hanging by death sentence to Govindaraju, who was convicted in a triple murder case that took place on January 20, 2009, in the Tilak Nagar police limits. Govindraju, a coconut vendor from Bhadravathi, was arrested by the police for murdering Satyabhama, 80, Jayashree, 50, and Vijayalakshmi, 62, for gain. He was frequenting Satyabhama's house as he had given some money to her as pygmy savings. During his visits to her house, he had noticed that Satyabhama possessed a lot of gold ornaments and money. On January 20, 2009, Govindaraju went to Satyabhama's house and on finding her alone, he killed her by hitting her on the head. But his actions were noticed by Satyabhamas relatives Jayashree and Vijayalakshmi who had just returned home after shopping. Tragedy struck the family of Najma Bano, a resident of Danilimda in Old Ahmedabad, early Wednesday morning when her daughter and son-in-law were crushed to death by a speeding car. The car was driven by a 14-year-old boy. The family was sleeping outside their hutment in the slum when the car hit them. Four others were injured in the incident. Police later detained the teenager and seized the car. Yet to come to terms with the tragedy, Najma Bano told Deccan Herald: " The car came speeding, dragging people with it. The Tamil Nadu Police have arrested a 25-year old woman in Cuddalore district on charges of murdering a recently married sub-inspector. Police sources said on Wednesday that the accused, K Vanitha, hailing from Chidambaram district, had an illicit relationship with the cop, who had refused to marry her. The victim, P Ganesan, who was from a village near Panruti, finished his police training and joined as a sub-inspector at Killai police station in 2012. Ganesan was issued a transfer order in February 2013 to report for duty at Ramanatham police station in Villupuram district following complaints that he had developed an illicit relationship with a married woman, Vanitha. She had met him in connection with a domestic issue. After they alerted the police, Vanitha was apprehended near Parangipettai. She confessed to have murdered the sub-inspector. A 14-year-old boy died under mysterious circumstances at a government school in outer Delhi's Rohini on Wednesday afternoon. While police suspect he died of an epileptic attack, the victim's family has alleged negligence on the part of school authorities and suspected he was beaten by a teacher.
