Most roads in the city continue to be unsafe due to two major causes drunk-driving and helmetless riding. These two offences have also challenged pedestrian safety, despite efforts by various agencies to improve the situation. Increasing vehicular population and severe congestion are indirectly prompting these two offences. Personal vehicles There are about 68 lakh vehicles in the city, including about 40% two-wheelers and 20% four-wheelers. Around 34 lakh vehicles have been added to the city between 2006 and 2016. Bengaluru has personal vehicles accounting for 43%, highest in the country. Mumbai has about 18% personal vehicles due to a better mass transport system. Head injury Head injury remains the top reason for deaths in accidents. The head is more prone to be injured, among other organs. The city witnessed 793 accident deaths in 2016. The Cubbon Park traffic police arrested three people who were indulging in bike stunts around Queens Circle to impress their peers and girlfriends by posting the footage on social networking sites. The bike, a car and a mobile used for videographing the wheelie stunts were also seized. The arrested have been identified as Naveen Channegowda (25), an ITI student and a resident of Shivanagar in Rajajinagar, who rode a Yamaha bike, Abhishek Mayigowda (26), a native of Channarayapatna in Hassan district and a resident of Jogupalya in Halasuru. He was driving the car with Naveen Vishwanath (32), a building contractor from Manjunathanagar in Bengaluru, who was sitting in the car shooting the wheelie with a mobile phone camera, the police said. The arrests were based on photographs forwarded to the police by an alert citizen. A woman working at a mobile phone service store tried to murder a vegetable vendor by hitting him on his private parts over a petty issue at Geddalahalli in Sanjaynagar on Monday. The suspect, Nagashree (35), is a resident of Geddalahalli in Sanjaynagar. She is known for creating ruckus in the area and assaulting residents over petty issues, the police said. She had stripped a woman constable when the constable had gone to her house to detain her in a case in 2013. There are seven cases against Nagashree, including assaulting workers at hotels and cloth stores. Nagashree picked a fight with Gangadhar (40), a roadside vegetable vendor at Geddalahalli on Sunday as he was selling vegetables on the pavement. The Supreme Court on Monday granted two weeks' time to the Karnataka government to explain why a CBI probe should not be ordered into the suicide of deputy superintendent of police M K Ganapathi on July 7 last year. A bench of Justices Adarsh Kumar Goel and U U Lalit refused a plea for four weeks' time made by Additional Advocate General Devadutt Kamat and state's standing counsel Joseph Aristotle to file their response on a petition filed by M K Kushalappa, father of the deceased. They wanted four weeks' time to place relevant records, including the CID report.
