Apple files a patent for a new, more flexible MacBook clamshell design 1.6.2018 DNA: Recent Columns
A patent filed by Apple suggests future versions of the brand's MacBooks may get a Microsoft Surface Book-style hinge. Apple appears to be working on a new concept for the Macbook. According to a patent filed with the European Patent Office, the Cupertino-based tech company is developing a laptop enclosure with a "flexible portion" that "may allow the rigid material to be folded in half and thus acts as a laptop clamshell.” The Apple patent reads “A top portion may support a display screen and a bottom portion may support a keyboard, track pad, and the like, while an interior defined by sidewalls of the rigid material may house a variety of electronic components....In this manner, the enclosure (or a portion thereof) may be created from a single rigid material, while still providing flexibility and bending for the enclosure.” Images from the patent demonstrate the curve of what the brand has dubbed a “living hinge,” which doesn't follow the trend of slimming down the laptop; in fact it's the opposite, it ...

Ensure software standards don't create monopolies: Ravi Shankar Prasad tells IT cos 8.5.2018 DNA: Urban Tales
Law and IT minister Ravi Shankar Prasad today cautioned software companies that norms or standards being worked out by the industry should not create monopolies in the market and instead facilitate digital inclusion and innovation. "Standards .. Should be nuanced in a manner that the ability of standards should not become monopoly of few and exclusion of others. Why I am saying so because open source of software was area of great debate even from international players too. On the garb of close source I would not allow India to become monopoly of few," Prasad said. He was speaking at an event by CNBC-TV18 and The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) on standard for softwares. Earlier some of the global firms have attempted that software coding should be granted patents but the same had been opposed by various Indian companies and not-profit entities. "Standard must lay down standard of compliance, standard must lay down to facilitate operation, standard to ensure cost effective operation. Standard should also ...

US drags China to WTO on discriminatory technology licensing requirements 24.3.2018 DNA: Opinion
The United States today dragged China to the World Trade Organisation, accusing it of unfair technology practices that run counter to the WTO rules. The US Trade Representative, Robert Lighthizer, filed a request for consultations with China at the WTO to address Beijing's discriminatory technology licensing requirements. The request comes a day after US President Donald Trump announced that he was directing the USTR to pursue dispute settlement in the WTO to confront China over its policies that result in unfair treatment for US companies and innovators trying to do business in China. China appears to be breaking WTO rules by denying foreign patent holders, including US companies, basic patent rights to stop a Chinese entity from using the technology after a licensing contract ends, the USTR said. In a statement, the USTR said China also appears to be breaking WTO rules by imposing mandatory adverse contract terms that discriminate against and are less favorable for imported foreign technology. These ...

India grants Pfizer patent for pneumonia vaccine; health groups say disease treatment will be out of reach for poor 22.8.2017 DNA: Wide Angle
India has granted Pfizer Inc a patent for its powerful pneumonia vaccine Prevenar 13, in a blow to some health groups that said this would put the treatment out of reach of thousands in poorer nations. The decision by India's patent office bars other companies from making cheaper copies of the vaccine and allows Pfizer to exclusively sell it in India until 2026. It's a big victory for the U.S. drugmaker in a market that has the world's largest number of pneumonia cases, a lung disease that kills nearly a million children a year globally. The decision also has international implications, as several poorer nations rely on India's robust drugs industry to supply cheaper copies of medicines and vaccines. It also comes at a time of ongoing U.S. pressure on India to tighten its patent laws. The United States Trade Representative expressed concerns about India's intellectual property laws in a report in June, and listed it among countries whose IP laws unfairly favour local companies. Pfizer's vaccine protects ...
