CSIR invention BGR-34 enlisted as major achievement in Delhi 14.6.2018 DNA: Wide Angle
The Union Science and Technology Ministry enlisted the cost-effective, herbal drug for diabetes - BGR 34, as one of their major achievements of the last four years under the Modi government at a conference in Delhi. Created by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), the drug has already acquired number one slot in an anti-diabetic ayurvedic product category in the IMS Health ranking. "Derived from Ayurvedic plant extracts, the BGR-34 anti-diabetic herbal drug is matching the efficacy level of any branded modern medicine in controlling the sugar level," said Dr Girish Sahni, Director General, Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). Dr Harsh Vardhan, Union Minister of Science and Technology pointed out that the Ayush ministry too has approved it after it was tested on patients over a period of 18 months in Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, and Karnataka. Herbal drug BGR-34 helps cutting down heart attack risk : study 19.5.2018 General News
A study published in an international journal has noted that ayurvedic drug, BGR-34, has been found to be effective in cutting down heart attacks by 50 per cent in diabetic patients. It also found that glycosylated haemoglobin level, tested to monitor the long-term control of diabetes mellitus, of at least half of the patients who had participated in the clinical trial for the herbal drug was under control, said a government official. The results hold importance given that achieving near normal glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) significantly decreases risk of microvascular and macrovascular complications causing organ and tissue damage, the official said. Glycosylated hemoglobin is the hemoglobin in the Red Blood Cells (RBCs) to which glucose is bound. The study was published in the Journal of Traditional and Complementary Medicine. Cabinet approves MoU between India, African nation in medicinal plants sector 25.4.2018 General News
The government today gave an ex-post facto approval for an agreement signed between India and an African island nation, Sao Tome and Principe, to increase cooperation in the field of medicinal Plants. The memorandum of understanding was signed on March 14 this year, an official statement said. The decision was taken in the Union Cabinet meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi here. The MoU assumes significance as there is global increase in traditional and alternative health care systems. It is resulting in world herbal trade which stands at USD 120 billion and is expected to reach USD 7 trillion by 2050, it said.
