Greens raise red flag over move to give EC power to local bodies 27.6.2017 DNA: Recent Columns
Environmentalists have raised the red flag over chief minister Vijay Rupani’s recent announcement to decentralise Environmental Clearance for construction projects. Till now, environment clearance was handled by the Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB), which is an expert body. However, local bodies will now have the power to issue environment clearance.  The state government made the announcement after the central government, in June 2016, decided to decentralise this power in a bid to give a boost to affordable housing projects.  Currently, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) gives Building Use (BU) permission. Town and estate department officers issue BU certificates after an inspection of site where parameters like fire safety, lift services and tree plantation are taken into consideration.  However, after being entrusted with the power to issue EC, environmentalists fear rules will be thrown to the wind. Environmentalist Mahesh Pandya from Paryavaran Mitra, who believes the move spells ...

Rain intensifies in Malnad, coastal regions 26.6.2017 deccanherald.com
Inflow to some reservoirs increased, as many parts of the state received heavy showers on Monday. Monsoon was active throughout Kodagu district, brightening hopes of water levels going up substantially in the dams of the Cauvery river basin. Rain gathered momentum in Bhagamandala andTalacauvery, leading to an increase in inflow of water at Triveni Sangama, raising possibilities of Bhagamandala-Talacauvery being cut off from the rest of the district. Gusty winds uprooted electricity poles in the Moornadu-Napoklu region, disrupting power supply. The inflow of water to Harangi reservoir has increased. The water level in the reservoir stood at 2,817.25 feet against the maximum capacity of 2,859 feet. The inflow was 980 cusecs. The water level has increased by four feet in the last four days. Plentiful rain has revived the Abbey Falls and a roaring waterfalls is a rare spectacle and an exhilarating experience for tourists. Greens, residents oppose move to expand Kaiga plant 25.6.2017 Deccan Herald - State
Environmentalists, scientists and members of the public on Sunday expressed reservation over the move to set up units 5 and 6 of the Kaiga nuclear power plant, at a meeting at Yellapur.

The meeting was presided over by Gangadharendra Saraswathi Swami of the Swarnavalli Mutt.
The pontiff said the government could harness renewable forms of energy like solar and wind to meet the growing needs of electricity, instead of spending huge amounts for the expansion of the nuclear plant. He said thermal power harmed only the immediate surroundings. But nuclear power plants harm the environment in a radius of 100 km, the pontiff said. The seer said this was the only rain forest in the world where a nuclear plant had been set up.

T V Ramachandra of the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, said 1,474 hectares of forest in the two-km buffer zone of the Kaiga power station had been reduced 407 hectares.
