National Association of Head Teachers to conduct pilots of its own inspection regime, which it is calling Instead

A powerful union of headteachers has set up a school inspectorate in an attempt to eventually overthrow Ofsted.

The National Association of Head Teachers (NAHT), which has more than 28,000 members across the UK, is conducting pilots this September of its own inspection regime, which it is calling Instead.

Instead inspectors will all be working headteachers and will only visit schools a similar size to their own and outside their town or county. One of the main criticisms of the current state-funded inspection regime, Ofsted, is that retired out-of-touch heads who have worked in small primary schools, for example, can be picked to inspect large secondary schools.

Instead heads will offer feedback and stay in touch with the head after their inspection. They will look beyond a school's results, the NAHT said. Teachers have long berated Ofsted inspectors for concentrating ...

Atos benefit claimants face biased medical assessments, doctor alleges - The Guardian -- Front Page

GP Greg Wood says claimants were not assessed in 'even-handed way', blaming government training for poor treatment

Medical assessments of benefit applicants at Atos Healthcare were designed to incorrectly assess claimants as being fit for work, one of the company's former senior doctors has claimed.

Greg Wood, a GP who worked at the company as a senior adviser on mental health issues, said claimants were not assessed in an "even-handed way", that evidence for claims was never put forward by the company for doctors to use, and that medical staff were told to change reports if they were too favourable to claimants.

The doctor claimed he resigned in disgust at what was going on, saying that many doctors he had spoken to shared his concerns. "I think the Department for Work and Pensions is the real culprit here. It's the government training that makes Atos assessors do this."

The work capability assessment is used for the government's employment and support allowance, a benefit paid to ...

New Delhi, May 16 : Uncertainty of getting picked in the team for the next match and getting a lesser number of overs to bowl are the reasons behind IPL players indulging in spot-fixing to earn a quick buck, said former Delhi Police chief K.K. Paul, who in 2000 busted the first match fixing racket in India involving late South African captain Hansie Cronje and others. Paul was then the joint commissioner (Crime).

Angelina Jolie illustrates the virtues of celebrity power - The Guardian -- World Latest

The media response to Angelina Jolie's announcement about having had a double mastectomy illustrated yet again the power of celebrity.

Her picture was very predictably on every national newspaper front page in Britain (though not in the United States, and not even on page one of the New York Times on the day it ran her op-ed article about the operation).

This says something about the difference between British and American journalism. (Discuss). It also raises the question of whether celebrity power is merely a media construct, and therefore foisted on the public, or whether the public responds to it positively without the need of prompting. (Discuss also).

What cannot be in any doubt is that serious matters often achieve a widespread public reaction when celebrities get involved.

Indeed, Jolie's visit in March 2013 to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in order to campaign against rape in conflict zones was a case in point.

To use the appropriate cliché, it "raised awareness" of ...

As sixth form beckons, pupils like me are faced with a bewildering range of subjects, gloomy job prospects and finding a path that accords with their religious beliefs

My final GCSE exams of the year approaching. Year 11 has felt like a blur: sixth-form open evenings, choosing A-levels, and applying for a place. It's no wonder I feel like falling face down on to the practice papers on my bedroom floor, felled by the responsibilities to come.

The first four years of secondary school were the calm before the storm. My friends and I were carefree. We used to say we couldn't wait until we were released from the confines of the school walls, never to look back. Now I devote a part of every day to depressing myself about the future. Let me explain...

Worry number 1: picking A-levels

Why is it so hard to choose A-levels? I've tried it all – reading posts on the Student Room, consulting the National Careers Service , asking friends and teachers – but I end up feeling more indecisive than ...
