Revisit Bicycling enablement approach? - Praja.in

After sitting thru lessons from the Jayanagar cycle lanes rollout, the various DPR's that have been presented for different areas, polls by Praja both online & offline during mobilicity & practical experience riding on Bangalore streets we could be doing this a lot more effectively.

It has been established that the primary concern of safety & secutiry in a bad driving culture need both physically seperated lanes for NMT & a culture of sharing the road by motorized vehicles with Non motorized vehicles. People do 3 types of cycling broadly. Local trips to shop or reach a destination within the area, long distance or inter area/layout commute to work & ride for health/sport/leisure into/across the city & outside of city.

Because of the mixed use nature of the city I have found that local destinations & shopping is a start stop travel including crossing the roads quite frequently pushing the cycle to reach shops on either side of the road. ...

Someone (BPAC?), please fund a CIO for Bangalore - Praja.in

"Can't fix it if you can't measure it". That is what a lot of people say. There is a lot that gets measured by BBMP/BMTC/BWSSB/BESCOM/BDA etc. But we just don't get to see. Want GIS data used for creating masterplan to be public? Want to know the city's water consumption, and inflow from each source every day? Want to know the power in/power out/power denied stats each day? Want to know the road accident stats by police station every day? Yes, I want to.

The funny thing is that all this is being measured. Moreover, many departments want to share a lot of this out regularly as well. But they probably don't know how to do it. Plus, data is a funny thing. Its value is best know to who needs it, not who produces it. So, a lot of what may be useless for govt dpts/agencies, could be gold for us :)

So a request here. Can someone please fund a CIO (CDO or Chief Data Officer could be a better name) for Bangalore? BPAC , could you? The role would ...

Effective handling of storm water requires good roads without dirt. Normal dirt can be

mud

earth soil

animal excreta

Spitting

Gravel

Plastics

Tree leaves / braches etc

Apart from the above normal items, it is not uncommon to find variety of all discarded items be it liquor bottles and left over food of night street parties . The sweepers appointed by the contractor do take of these items when sweeping the roads. However the mud / earth soil is left out. This eventually clogs the SWD as there is no filtering concept, mud traps.

All other types including electronic items are being disposed at designated locations in each ward without segregation. There is a lack of awareness even among educated people even in the BBMP.

BBMP under the present commissioner does not seem to be unduly bothered.

In our city of Bangalore disposal of waste is outsourced to contractors whose bids are the lowest. The bidding operation is handled by the Corporation ...

Now that we have a new goverement, let us make a vision document and send it to our CM.

Some things about this draft document -

1. It is city (urban) specific. I would like to say Bangalore specific, but strategy wise whatever is true for Bangalore is pretty much true for other cities in Karnataka as well. We will not cover rural problems or issues not directly about city governance (like judicial systems, this is a national issue)

2. We list the problem, but also explain on what lines the solution should be – for eg: suppose we complain that traffic is bad with too much of traffic jams, the goverment might actually listen and cut trees to widen roads. Now that may not be exactly what we intended. So there are a few lines that explain on where the framework of the solution should lie in.

3. Need to agree on the priority as well as on the strategy outlined to solve the problem. Number of items is limited to 10. It needs to be breif, clear and yet well ...
