Tucked away in Konkan - Deccan Herald - Supplements

Cool breeze, colourful fishermen's boats, little crabs running sideways, sturdy bullock carts, white sands blending into the blue waters and blue waters melting into a deep blue sky is a snapshot of Nandgaon, a pristine stretch of beach between Murud and Alibaug.

Considered one of the best beaches of Konkan, it is not frequented by many.
There are things to do around Nandgaon, other than enjoying the peace and serenity of the beach outlined by lush green trees. For wildlife lovers, there is the Phansad Wildlife Sanctuary. It was once the wildlife hunting reserve of Siddhi Nawabs of the Janjira state.

Abounding in a wide variety of flora, the sanctuary also provides a camping site inside.
There are around 279 species of fauna found in the forest and it is particularly well-known for the giant flying squirrel. A hyena, snake, sambar or wild boar may grace you with its presence in the long trek inside the forest. If lady luck smiles on you, you can catch a glimpse of Prince &mdash; the ...

A taste of Assam - Deccan Herald - Supplements

The best thing about Assamese food is it allows for innovation. Take the masor tenga (sour fish) for example. You can make it with just tomatoes or toss in gourd, spinach, olives, berries, or the 101 varieties of greens that were found in the land up to our mothers' grandmothers' times.

There can be as many varieties of masor tenga as the range of one's creativity can stretch. But the essence is not to be lost: it has to be sour, light, the fish appropriately cooked, right in texture and taste. And this can be achieved only when all the ingredients are in the right balance.

I remember how my maternal grandmother in Tipling, Duliajan (upper Assam) used to set a huge pot of boiling water on a hearth before disappearing into the expanse of vegetation behind the house. She would shortly emerge out of it with a bunch of fern, Asiatic pennywort, long coriander leaves, spinach, olives, or a few 'ou' tengas (an exotic vegetable found in Assam). All of this would go into the pot of boiling water, to ...

Significance of space - Deccan Herald - Supplements

With her latest bronze sculpture of roots, Hemali Bhuta looks to alter perspective, notes Gayatri Rangachari Shah

One of the more intriguing cultural voices to emerge from a generation brought up in an increasingly global and ascendant India is the contemporary artist Hemali Bhuta.
Three years after getting a graduate arts degree at the University of Baroda, Bhuta, 34, is currently showing 'Speed Breakers/Roots' at the Sculpture Park at Frieze London.

Modelled on beech tree roots, the bronze work evokes two central themes in Bhuta's art: spatial exploration and the idea of transience. The Frieze sculpture, the culmination of the artist's three-month residency at Yorkshire Sculpture Park in northern England, is laid on the ground, allowing a viewer to walk around, over or past it.

"The work is called 'Speed Breakers' and literally the composition is intended to stop people in their tracks, or at least to slow them down, give them pause," Clare Lilley, the programme director at Yorkshire ...

The Bethamangala reservoir which was facing a water crisis for the last seven years witnessed a sudden flow of abundant water due to heavy rains caused by Cyclone Nilam.

The water level in the reservoir, which is spread across about one thousand acres, has now risen to a significant level. The small lakes and ponds in the surrounding areas have also filled with water.

Bethamangala is a reservoir and a water pumping and filtration station. The entire Kolar Gold Fields gets the water supplied from this place.

In the early days of gold mining in Kolar Gold Fields water was pumped out from the underground and other groundwater sources. As the population of Kolar Gold Fields continued to grow, the natural water source in the form of Bethamangala lake was found to be most feasible. Bethamangala is located on the banks of Palar river, located five miles South East of the city.

John Taylor and Sons Company lobbied the Mysore government to provide clean potable drinking water for the population in ...

A total of 677.5 mm rain this year, with 86.5 mm in October, is a good sign for the district, for both water supply and agricultural work, said Deputy Commissioner D S Vishwanath.

"Sowing has been completed on 1.2 acres of land in the district and the produce on 87,000 acres is good. There should be no shortage of fodder the next six months," he added.

He was addressing a progress review meeting of drought relief work on Saturday.
"The Animal Husbandry Department has provided minikit seeds to farmers and we should get 58,000 tonnes of fodder. An additional fodder of 85 tonnes should be available from ragi and other crops," he said, adding that there should be no shortage of fodder till March 2013 as 2.77 tonnes have been grown.

Commenting on the rain due to the recent Nilam cyclone, Vishwanath said there had been no case of loss of life in the district.

"There has been some loss of property, however, due to roof collapse in Kolar, Malur, Bangarpet and Srinivaspur taluks. The residents ...

Greek paradise - Asian Age: Travel

l recently visited Greece, especially the picturesque island of Mykonos because I desperately needed to detox and detach after a hectic few months of producing a film like Jism 2. I suddenly realised that production drains you and you need a holiday to pep you up and what could be better than Greece; it’s like greasing your body to function all over again. It is a very serene and absolutely relaxing place.
My phones were virtually off and hence I spent a lot of ‘Dino-time’ there. Believe me, swimming in the cold waters of the Aegean Sea was very rejuvenating and relaxing. Although, I also looked at locations and checked the viability to shoot a film there. I was also reading the scripts of the films I am going to be acting in, so that I could visualise them which I am not able to normally.
At the island of Mykonos, the view from my hotel room was the deep blue sea. Every morning, I would wake up and see expensive yachts and the beautiful sea making them bob up and down and deep in my heart, ...

`859cr water bills unpaid - Asian Age: Mumbai

Despite issuing repeated warnings and threats to cut off the water connections, both the government and private offices have failed to pay the water bills to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
Water bills amounting to a staggering `859.32 crore are still pending with several government offices and private consumers for several years.
The private consumers, which include the commercial offices, hotels, private companies, residential complexes etc, top the defaulters list with more than 60 per cent arrears pending with them. Out of the total outstanding bill of `859.32 crore, they constitute an astounding `551.95 crore.
Private consumers also include star hotels, which are yet to pay `73 lakh.
“The amount of the bills is piling up due to the two per cent interest that we charge every month on the amount. Disputes with several government offices have also resulted in the bills remaining pending. The government is refusing to pay the sewerage charge along with water bills, while the ...
