Aquifers in US Depleting, Contributing to Sea-Level Rise - Environmental News Network

The High Plains (also known as Ogallala) aquifer underlies more than 170,000 square miles of the United States. Aquifers are water storage areas that are made up of bodies of permeable rock that contain and transmit groundwater. The High Plains aquifer serves as the principal source of water for irrigation and drinking in the Great Plains, serving over two million people. However, substantial pumping of the aquifer for irrigation since the 1940s has resulted in large water-table declines. Depleting aquifers of groundwater can lead to serious consequences as pumping water out of the ground faster than it can be replenished can permanently dry up wells, reduce water in lakes and streams, and deteriorate water quality.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/EnvironmentalNewsNetwork/~4/Vd5Vmar3gVQ" height="1" width="1"/>

One way that subsistence farmers can break out of the poverty cycle is through growing cash crops, and this low-cost solar pump could help make that happen.<div class="feedflare">

David Dodge: Run-of-River 101: Human Scale Hydro - Green on HuffingtonPost.com

When I first heard of "run-of-river" I had it way wrong, I imagined a thousand little micro-turbines in a mountain creek turning like pinwheels as the water flows by. It's more of a kinder, gentler version of bigger hydro power projects -- none of the flooding of massive tracts of land.

TaKaDu: Using The Power Of Math To Solve The World's Water Leaks - Environmental News Network

According to the Asian Development Bank, Asia loses around 29 billion cubic metres of urban treated water every year due to leaking pipes, valued at nine billion dollars annually. The bank says that "by cutting physical losses to half the present level, 150 million people could be supplied with already treated water."<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/EnvironmentalNewsNetwork/~4/IFkzT-6U9gU" height="1" width="1"/>

Costa Rican scientists trial aquatic agriculture to boost food security - Environmental News Network

Costa Rican researchers are pioneering 'aquatic agriculture' — the method of growing crops on freshwater lakes and reservoirs — to boost food security in the developing world. The technique involves creating floating rafts on which vegetables, grains and flowers can be grown. Terrestrial crops such as grains and vegetables have their roots directly in the water or can be potted, with water being drawn up into their soil from the lake by capillary wicks, Ricardo Radulovich, a professor at the University of Costa Rica's Department of Agricultural Engineering, explains.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/EnvironmentalNewsNetwork/~4/ty4ZUrcHjGg" height="1" width="1"/>

Greece knows a thing or two about democracy. And as an increasingly arid nation, good water management is fundamental to its future, both political and physical. The recent financial crisis hasn't only tested Greek democracy, but its water as well.
