A geomagnetic storm (or solar storm) is a temporary disturbance of the Earth's magnetosphere caused by a massive solar flares or related sun output. A geomagnetic storm is caused by a solar wind shock wave which typically strikes the Earth's magnetic field 3 days after the event on the sun. The effect on the earth can be small or it can be large. Astronomers are predicting that a massive solar storm, much bigger in potential than the one that caused spectacular light shows on Earth earlier this month, will strike our planet in 2012 with a force of 100 million hydrogen bombs. This is far larger than average.

Technological developments [such as electric cars etc.] are welcome, but maybe it's time we started rethinking our car culture as whole. The average car in North America carries 1.5 people, which means that most cars on the road only have a driver in them.

Review of the Alyeska Pipeline Service Company's closely held internal investigation report on the May 25 oil spill at Trans-Alaska Pipeline System (TAPS) Pump Station #9 (PS9) reveals a disturbing picture of chronic problems on the aging, partially revamped pipeline that carries upwards of 550,000 barrels of oil per day (bpd) from the northern edge of the continent on an 800 mile journey across Alaska to reach tankers headed to the West Coast.

Blog - Fuel Stickers for Plug-in Hybrids Could Mislead Drivers - Technology Review Feed - Tech Review Top Stories

The new labels will help consumers, but as designed now, they could be misleading.

Yesterday the Environmental Protection Agency released a pair of proposed fuel economy labels, which could replace the miles-per-gallon stickers now required on new cars. The stickers are needed because miles per gallon isn't a useful measurement for vehicles that run on electricity part of the time or all of the time, and several such vehicles--electric cars and plug-in hybrids--are due to hit showrooms starting at the end of this year. ...

Want a car that gets good grades? Buy a hybrid - Grist News

by Randy Rieland.

The federal government doesn't do simple -- which make its latest idea for rating auto fuel efficiency a thing of rare beauty. Simple beauty.

Hummer bummer: Here's how it would work: Cars get graded based on gas mileage . That's it. Electric cars get an A+. Hybrids, like the Prius, get an A-. A Ford F-150 pickup earns a C. And a gas pig like the Ferrari 612 Scaglietti, a D. (The feds don't do Fs). Grades would be displayed in a big, honkin' circle at the top of the gas mileage sticker that prospective buyers would see on all showroom vehicles. This is one of two auto sticker updates being considered by the EPA and the Transportation Department. The other is a less dramatic sticker redesign. Naturally, ...
