One can feel a certain sympathy with the predicament federal in which New Democratic Party Leader Jack Layton finds himself on the rifle-and-shotgun registry issue, whipsawed between the successful wedge politics of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the effective machinations of Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff.

But so what? That&quot;s politics . And while politics may be the art of the possible, there&quot;s also a place for principle in public life.

Fri, 03/09/2010

Adam Bandt, the MP elect for the seat of Melbourne (long considered a “safe Labor seat”), and the Greens&apos; first House of Representatives member to be elected in a general election has been very busy since August 21. He says he left the triumphant Greens&apos; election night party at 11pm thinking that he would have to do some media the next day so should get a good night&apos;s sleep. He woke up the next morning and after a couple of hours having coffee and reading the paper, the situation sunk in.

WASHINGTON – When word came that President Barack Obama was going to have an impromptu meeting with Mayor Michael Bloomberg Aug. 27, many in Indian country were hopeful. Hopeful that a president who has sometimes made it his business to call attention to issues tinged by race, religion, and other “hot button” forces would talk to the New York City leader about a racially-charged comment he had recently made involving Native Americans.

Let's say you have a basic wood-burning fireplace. Charming as it may be, this old-fashioned device pollutes the air and sends a large amount of its heat roaring out the chimney. But there's no need to get rid of your old fireplace. You can insert an energy-efficient gas-burning fireplace. Many models produce the same comforting yellow-orange flames that you enjoy in a wood fireplace and even contain "logs" made of fireproof material so realistic you would have to look closely to tell the difference. And you don't have to bother with wood and ashes.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/EnvironmentalNewsNetwork/~4/Ej_tkHjZPgQ" height="1" width="1"/>

Smart cities are (un)paving the way for urban farmers and locavores - Grist Magazine

by Kerry Trueman.

If some sort of natural disaster or terrorist attack were to shut down New York City&amp;#8217;s food supply chain, our supermarket shelves would reportedly be picked clean within three days. Other U.S. cities aren&amp;#8217;t any better prepared for such emergencies, thanks to our fuelish dependence on a globalized food system.

Economists Agree: Stimulus Created Nearly 3 Million Jobs - CommonDreams.org Headlines

by David J. Lynch

Amid mounting signs that the economic recovery is faltering, one potential remedy seems out of the question: a booster shot of government spending.

The White House says the multiyear $814 billion stimulus program passed by Congress in 2009 boosted employment by 2.5 million to 3.6 million jobs and raised the nation&apos;s annual economic output by almost $400 billion. A recent study by two prominent economists generally agrees, crediting the pump-priming with averting &quot;what could have been called Great Depression 2.0.&quot;
