The Wilfred Laurier Memorial was a dictated letter addressed to Laurier which outlined the grievances and history of the first century of contact with non-Aboriginal people from a First Nations perspective. Laurier read it, promised to meet the chiefs, but lost the federal election a year later. His successor, Sir Robert Borden, never followed through with this promise.

Over 30 laureates of the Right Livelihood Award, known as the ‘alternative Nobel Prize’, have signed an open letter to President Khama of Botswana urging him to allow the Bushmen access to water.

The appeal comes as world experts arrive in Stockholm for World Water Week, and ahead of the Right Livelihood Award conference in Bonn, 14-18th September. It follows the UN’s adoption of water as a human right in July.

Describing the government’s actions as ‘inexcusable’, the laureates’ letter urges it to ‘allow the Bushmen access to water on their lands , and work with them to ensure a sustainable future for everyone’.

The laureates express concern ...

GYPSUM - Eagle Valley's march back to Colorado prep soccer's Elite Eight was a step in the right direction, even if that step was painful, said coach Jason Ritmiller.
The Devils fell to Coal Ridge, 5-0, Thursday night, the first time the Titans have won their non-league match against Eagle Valley.
For Eagle Valley, the sun will come up tomorrow just like Li'l Orphan Annie says it will. When it does, Ritmiller says his team will have much different outlook on life.
"They'll come back tomorrow and they'll be a new team," he said, looking out at the field where the Devils had just been handed one of life's little character building moments.
For Coal Ridge, it was a big win for the consistently improving program.

GYPSUM - Eagle Valley beat back nerves and the Grand Junction Tigers to win Thursday's season volleyball opener.
The Devils won the best-of-five match three games to one, 25-23, 25-16, 24-26 and 25-23.
They were as nervous as a saint in Sin City before the match. Between the nerves and an aggressive start by Grand Junction, the Lady Devils found themselves down 6-1 in the first game.
"We were nervous early in the first game and got beat up a little, but we have exceptional senior leadership and they kept us on an even keel," said Eagle Valley coach Shawn Weatherred.
It didn't take long to turn set things right.
Junior outside hitter Alex Lassa drilled a couple kills so hard through the Grand Junction defense that it looked like she ...

Little League baseball is like life. Stay with me, this is darned near Shakespearean.
Most of the stuff your kids should know, and you, you can learn from a well-played baseball game. Or a poorly played baseball game.
You have time to think of this stuff when you've put in your last pitcher, you're still losing 21-3, and it occurs to you that your players don't care about the score as long as they get ice cream after the game.
n It's better to have swung and missed than never to have swung at all.
n If it hurts when you do that, quit doing that.
n There's no time clock. You have to finish. Or as Yogi Berra says, "It ain't over 'til it's over."
n It's a game. It's not life or death, despite how it might feel at the time. When the ...
