Demolitions changed residents' lives for the worse
|
29.7.2017 |

For Jyothi, who lived in a shanty in Ejipura, the horror of the slum eviction drive in 2013 is still fresh in her memory.
She was pregnant and was due to deliver in three days when the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike bulldozers razed her shanty. "There was no one to salvage my belongings and I was not in a position to lift even a glass of water. Yet, I had to ignore my pain and shift all my belongings with my neighbours' help," recalled Jyothi.
Three days later, Jyothi delivered the baby. When she returned from the hospital, the newborn had the open sky as her roof. "We still sleep on the footpath," Jyothi narrated.
Her neighbour Nusrath delivered her baby on the footpath amid the ruins.
These facts came out at the launch of 'Bengaluru's Continuing Inequity', an eviction impact assessment report of Ejipura four years after its demolition.
The report was prepared by the Housing and Land Rights Network, Fields View and Forum Against EWS Land Grab.

In the wake of Congress legislators' move to bring in a motion in the Assembly, seeking the removal of Upalokayukta Justice Subhash B Adi, members of various lake trusts and civic groups of Bengaluru have started an online petition seeking the chief minister's intervention to stop such attempts.
Addressed to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, the petition on change.org has garnered more than 150 supporters within two days. The Iblur lake team, Save Varthur lake team, Puttenahalli Neighbourhood Lake Improvement Trust (PNLIT), Forum for Sustainable South Bangalore, Kaikondrahalli lake team among others have reminded the CM about the steps taken by the Upalokayukta to revive water bodies.
Usha Rajagopalan, chairperson, PNLIT, said Justice Adi was able to do what no one else could, neither officials nor politicians, with regard to relocating the slum from the Puttenahalli lake bund. She said, "The slum was relocated with proper infrastructure facility. The Lokayukta office is a much-needed one and the post should ... |

Dollars Colony residents nervous
|
16.5.2015 |
deccanherald.com |
Residents of Dollars Colony (JP Nagar), an upmarket layout with neatly laid-out roads, wide spaces and big residences, are deeply anxious about possible demolitions in their area. When will the notice come and what will it state? How should they respond to it? What will happen to houses built on hard-earned savings and work of over 20, 30 years? These are the issues worrying the residents in the light of demolitions taken up by the Banglore Urban district authorities in other areas.
A prominent resident, Siddaiah, former Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) commissioner, is pushing hard with others to prove that they have done nothing illegal.
"We are not encroachers, squatters or criminals. We have purchased sites as per BDA regulations and the BDA knows it. The BDA should come out with a detailed report and submit it to the State government and to the revenue department, to prove that the BDA itself had formed the layout," Siddaiah told Deccan Herald.
His question: "BDA itself has a revenue officer ... |
