NMDC to buy back Rs 1k cr shares

The finance ministry has approved state-owned iron ore producer NMDC’s share buyback plan worth Rs 1,000 crore, an official said. The time line for the launch of the offer will be decided by the NMDC board.
“NMDC’s Rs 1,000 crore share buyback offer has been approved by the finance ministry,” the official said.
The government has already lined up buyback offers of nine PSUs including ONGC, Oil India, IOC, NHPC, BHEL, Nalco, Cochin Shipyard, NLC and KIOCL. These would cumulatively fetch about Rs 9,000 crore to the exchequer. The government holds 72.43 per cent in NMDC. Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL), the corporate entity of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant is targeting Rs 19,000 crore revenues and also net profit during the current fiscal, after suffering losses for the past few years, a senior official said.
The company clocked about Rs 16,500 crore revenue during the last fiscal with a loss of about Rs 800 crore.
RINL suffered Rs 1,236 crore loss in 2016-17 on turnover of Rs 12,706 crore, the official said adding the company reported Rs 200 crore EBIDTA margins in 2017-18.
"Going by the trend we expect to touch Rs 19,000 crore turnover during the current year. In March itself we registered Rs 20 crore profit before tax, it reflects the mood of the market. Overall we expect to make profits this year," the official told PTI.
The performance of the PSU has improved basically on the back of operational efficiency and also demand surge in the market, the official added.

The Forest Department has taken all precautionary measures to check forest fires in the Kudremukh National Park.
Along with desi knowledge, modern technology is being used to check the forest fire.
Sensitive area
The National Park is one of the sensitive areas in the world. The evergreen forest and Shola forest are known across the globe.
The Forest Department has already put in place precautionary measures and has formed fire lines across all forest ranges, including vulnerable areas at Mullodi, Soojigudda, Lakya, Ganapathikatte and Karle. Along with the staff of the department, the service of 50 persons hired on contract basis are used.
Burning solution
A fire line, is the practice of burning a strip of vegetation grass and clearing the land so that if there is a fire, the flames do not spread. Further, to douse the fire, a water sprayer along with a blower will be used, said the deputy range forest officer.

Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd (RINL), also known as Vizag Steel, is expecting to be back in the black in the 2018-19 fiscal after a gap of three years, a company official said today.
In the last fiscal, RINL, the second largest steel-making company in the public sector, posted an EBITDA of Rs 200 crore.
"In March 2018, RINL had posted a net profit. We expect to be back in the black by posting a net profit in the current fiscal," CMD of RINL, P Madhusudan said.
He told reporters here that the outlook for the steel industry is positive, as all the consuming sectors were looking up.
RINL, Madhusudan said, was now reaping the benefits of expansion and modernisation, which has stabilised by now coupled with steady markets, mostly in the southern region.
The company, which was sourcing the crucial iron-ore linkage from NMDC and Odisha Mining Corporation (OMC), was trying to increase the volumes from the latter as it was cheaper in terms of landing cost, he said.
