Tree planting, cleanliness drive mark green day
|
5.6.2017 |
Deccan Herald - News |
With "Connecting People to Nature" being the theme of this year's World Environment Day, many saplings were planted and distributed in the city on Monday.
Cleanliness drives were also organised across the city. Volunteers from Hasiru Usiru and residents from Jayanagar planted over 1,000 saplings in LIC Colony Park and a road in Jayanagar.
Residents of the locality participated in large numbers to green their locality to ensure that saplings replace the trees which were uprooted in the recent rain. Apart from this, over a 1,000 children participated in the children's rally organised by the Jayanagar ward committee.
Over 150 children from Sadhguru Sainath School and 50 volunteers from United Way Bengaluru planted 600 saplings at Kudlu Doddakere near Kudlu. The 40-acre water body was adopted by United Way Bengaluru. The aim of the plantation drive was to enhance the biodiversity and restore the beauty of the lake.

Cash-strapped BBMP wants to run pod taxis
|
10.5.2017 |
TOI: Bangalore Times |
For years, Bengaluru has been listening to the promises of the BBMP. We have dreamed when the promises were made, waited for years for some of it to come true, and moved on when most of it doesn’t. So when BBMP paints a picture of the future that is Bengaluru -- a city where the last-mile connectivity issue of the Metro service is solved by a pod taxi network -- it is a thrilling one. Forget that the Metro itself is several years behind its deadline, and that the pod taxi network has not been implemented in the most developed of nations. |

Skywalks of inaccessibility
|
8.4.2017 |
deccanherald.com |
Hardly anyone uses the existing skywalks. Yet, a hundred more are being built across the city, their landings encroaching upon footpaths. Should pedestrians be forced this way to help ease vehicular movement?
An obsession with motorists has left most city roads deeply offensive to pedestrians. One look at those monstrous skywalks with their legs encroaching deep on the footpaths should convince everyone of a priority gone horribly wrong.A vehicular overload has left most roads too tough to cross for pedestrians young and old, able and disabled.
Zebra crossings, once the favoured mode to get to the other side, have disappeared. Instead, walkers are told to climb up heights of 20 feet or more, negotiate unlit skywalks and risk their safety.
Hardly anyone takes the existing skywalks. Either they are too high, located nowhere near where people want to cross or simply just unnecessary. Shouldn't this have convinced the state of the futility of the entire exercise?

Bengalureans take up signature campaign against tree cutting
|
9.2.2017 |
deccanherald.com |
Bengalureans on Thursday raised their voices against the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike's proposal to axe 112 trees on Jayamahal Road to widen the stretch.
Around 15 volunteers from two groups - Citizens for Bengaluru and Citizens Initiative of Jayamahal Area - collected signatures of Jayamahal Road residents. "We have collected around 300 signatures. Volunteers from various parts of the city joined hands for the campaign. People in the area are not convinced with the idea of road widening and do not want the trees to be axed and so they have shown their support," said Srinivas Avallili, member of Citizens for Bengaluru.
Abhilasha Sachdev, member of Citizens Initiative of Jayamahal Area, said people were shown a piece of paper which stated that this is an objection to BBMP's proposal to cut trees to widen Jayamahal Road. "All those we approached have signed against the tree cutting. They have also agreed to email BBMP Forest cell to oppose the cutting of trees. The campaign will continue tomorrow in ... |

Parking at Cubbon Park to be dearer in 2016
|
27.12.2015 |
deccanherald.com |
Parking vehicles at Cubbon Park is set to be a costly affair with the horticulture department deciding to hike the fees from January or February next.
The proposed hike will be applicable to two-wheelers, cars maxi cabs, minibuses and cars. According to department officials, the move is being made in the wake of motorists parking their vehicles for long hours on the park premises against a paltry fee.
For the first time, the fee has also been fixed separately on the basis of the hourly duration of the parking. The rates have been fixed on the basis of the following: first three hours, three hours to six hours and more than six hours.
For instance, the two-wheelers have to shell out Rs 15 for the first three hours of parking, Rs 45 for three to six and Rs 10 for every hour beyond that. The same pattern also applies to other categories of vehicles like cars, maxi cabs and minibuses. The parking fee will be collected by a private company the tender for which has been floated already, the department ... |

'We don't want Metro, we want trees'
|
24.11.2015 |
deccanherald.com |
A public meeting called by the BBMP in regard to the proposed felling of 313 trees for the Metro rail project witnessed angry scenes and protest by members of the general public and NGOs at the Palike office in Malleswaram on Tuesday. "We don't want metro, we want trees," they shouted.
The forest officials, who were under pressure, immediately asked the Metro authorities to conduct a GIS mapping of the entire network where trees were supposed to be cut.
They then stopped the meeting midway abruptly. When a Metro official started talking of how transport had evolved from the ox-cart to the present day trains, an enraged public said: "We are aware of this. There is no need for this information."
The Environment Support Group representative Leo Saldanha made a presentation on the effects of tree-cutting by Metro and later read out court documents to prove how this would happen and how the Metro should comply with the order.
Saldanha said Namma Metro had to comply with the Karnataka Town and Country Planning ... |
